MyCloud backup questions

I’d like to backup my 4TB MyCloud device in the simplest way possible (i’m not techy).

If I understand correctly, i can’t do this to any cloud services like Dropbox?

But I can do it to another 4TB external USB hard drive?

If so, what spec hard drive do i need to buy - ie does it need to be powered by mains or is usb fine?

Any other specs like format? USB3.0 or is 2.0 fine?

Thanks

thank-you. So what i can’t tell from the attachments are the answers to my two key questions:

1 - can i backup to Dropbox or other cloud based services. If so how?

2 - if not and i have to buy an external drive, does it need have a specific spec ie a separate power source

@RocketBaby

#1 Have you set your device up? Have you looked at the Dashboard and checked each tab out? Be sure to read all the Help information provided.

#2 Hard Drives, USB Drives, and Memory Cards | Western Digital Click on Shop, check the devices out and read all the information provided.

Yes - device is setup fine but couldn’t see any tab for Dropbox

Nor anything mentioned if hard drive should be powered separately or not> I have looked through all the manuals

@RocketBaby

I don’t believe you are reading anything because it is there!!! What WD Device do you own? Is it a second generation WDMYCLOUD?

Look at the apps and see what is available.

GoodSync

Automatically backup or synchronize data stored on your NAS device to any destination including other NAS devices, PC, Mac, servers, or cloud storage. GoodSync is using block-level data transfer and works faster than Windows …More

If you don’t know how to do any of this, do you have a Best Buy nearby? Call the Geek Squad or at Apple Stores check with the geniuses. They may charge you though for their time.

What specific My Cloud model do you have? As the following WD Support Knowledge Base Article indicates, the third party Dropbox app (that one installs through the Apps tab in the My Cloud Dashboard) is not supported on the second generation single bay My Cloud.

For second generation single bay My Cloud users they may have to try GoodSync to see if they can use it to backup to Dropbox or other online cloud storage sites.

Otherwise one can use the Local, USB and Remote backup apps in OS5 (non Dropbox storage backup).

Thank you Bennor. This is the part number WDBCTL0040HWT-10

Does that make it the 2nd gen single bay you refer to above?

Yes. The second gen single bay My Cloud’s P/N number (on the bottom of the unit) ends with “-10” (P/N: WDBCTLxxxxxxx- 10).

Thank-you. I read the manual but it doesn’t mention Dropbox at all or anything about powered external USB. I don’t know what a BestBuy is - I’m in the UK.

Thank-you - this is very helpful. Much appreciated
