Not sure whats going on. Pretty much had flawless movie watching until a few days ago. The unit will not play anything at all. If I do a reset to factory defaults, I will scroll to a movie and it will preview it, I click play and then it sets at 0:00:00 and never moves. After I hit back and try to play anything else at all, the blue circle just spins. Tried my media server and a direct usb hard drive. Same thing. Was runnig the latest 1.03 firmware, just updated to 1.03.38_V and the same thing. Anyone have any suggestions?
Are you in the correct forum?
The 1.03.38_V code is for the WDTV LIVE, not the WDTV HD.
Actually, Iāve been having this issue repeatedly, it will start to load something, show how long the movie is (timewise) and then the screen goes dark. I can stop and go back to the main directory, but if I try to play a different movie, it just has the spinning circle in the center that doesnāt stop.
Very frustrating. I just updated to the most recent firmware for the WD TV, not Live.
Did you try to play an MKV file made with MKVMerge 4.2.0? Ā If so, it will wreck the box and youāll have to unplug it to get control back.
I still have the same problem. Can you explain āunplugā. I have reset my device and unplugged all my cables. Nothing changed.
Thanks.
Today happened the same thing to me. I tried connecting my external WD HDD and for the first time, it took ages to simply connect the WD HD TV media player and the external HDD. After that, it wouldnāt load any content; whether it was music, pictures or movies.
Before this, I never had any issues with watching movies and what not. Already updated to the newest firmware version, unplugged the player, made a reset back to factory settings etc. Nothing helps.
Can someone help us out please?
I fixed the problem.Ā The reason is mkvmerge ver.4.2.0 as TonyPh12345 sayed. If a movie is made by this version WD Media player cannot play anything and you got a black screen without playing. If you reset or unplug your device it will work. But if you open again a file made with 4.2.0 it will crash. This happens to other media players too.
I downloaded previous version of mkvmerge (ver. 2.4.0) and muxed the video.Ā It works. If you want a newer version of mkvmerge you must test wich version works (4.1.1 not worked for me).Ā Want to know what version the file was made, just install MediaInfo GUI.
Hope this helps.
anyone know why mkvmerge 4.2.0 is doing this?
Ā The problem is itās default is using Header Compression when mixing. To solve this:
-
Click on video track in mkvmerge
-
choose Extra Options
-
choose None for Compression
-
repeat this for all tracks (Audio, Text) before muxing
I havenāt had an issue since.

I fixed the problemā¦ If you reset or unplug your device it will work.
Iām finding that to not be the case. At first I didnāt know what was going on. All of the sudden, it āstopped workingā. Wouldnāt play any audio files; wouldnāt play any video files.
I eventually noticed that when browsing, thereās the box at the top, like if youāre browsing with an audio file playing, with the name of one of the compressed-header .mkv files in it.
So the player is too busy not playing the compressed-header file, to play anything else, audio or video.
Iāve done numerous "reset to default"sā¦ Iāve done numerous paper-clip resetsā¦ Iāve deleted the .db and other files in the .wd_tv folderā¦ Iāve left the WDTV unplugged for over 24 hoursā¦ and yet, when I turn it on, once it has scanned whatever drive is attached, thereās STILL that āaudio playingā box at the top, with the name of the compressed-header file that ābrokeā it.
I donāt know what else to do to not have it re-try playing the file when the box is turned back on. And thatās VERY odd, since it doesnāt resume other movies or audio files when turned on (or at least it never did in the past).
Sure, I can re-mux any file that happens to have compression, so that this doesnāt happen again, but right now, Iāve spent over a week trying, and Iād just like it to be able to play the files that it used to play.
Hereās a hail-mary passā¦ Ā Try removing the āoffendingā .mkv file from the drive and deleting the .wd-tv folder, then reset WITHOUT the drive attached, then plug in and see if it goes away.
I went above and beyond the Hail-Mary.
I left the Gen1 unplugged for a week.Ā I moved files around.Ā I started with a fresh drive.Ā I inspected every video file for which version of mkvmerge was used, and re-muxed any version 4ās, before putting the files back on a clean drive.Ā I then reset the box (without drives attached) and it re-flashed itself with the ālatestā firmware.
When the fresh, header-compression-free drive was connected, the box was back working ā no more attempting to resume a non-existant audio file.
Itās still bizarre that the box was acting that way, and didnāt want to cooperate, but it seems all good now.
Thanks Tonyā¦ I know you donāt have every device, but you still try your best with every problem that comes along.
