Unable to Change Wifi Access Point SSID and Password (Error Message)

Hello!

I recently purchased a My Passport Wireless Pro 3TB device. I am unable to change the wifi name (SSID) or password. When I do I get the following error message…

Unable to retrieve data. Make sure there are no network connectivity issues and try again. (200005)

and here is a screenshot:

I have updated the firmware, but it had no effect…

Anyone have any ideas how to resolve this?

Thanks!

Moderator, another MPW Pro question in the wrong forum – please move it to correct forum.

Already done.

With regards to the opening post, try a factory restore. Instructions are on page 44 (51 digital) of the user’s manual.

Thank you for the suggestion. Do you know of doing a factory restore wipes the hard drive contents itself or will the data remain intact?

Thanks.

As explained in the User’s manual, you have both options.

Just make sure the process is not interrupted, so it’s best done when the unit is fully charged.

I will try this and get back to you, thank you.

Hello,

One possible cause would be the “Wi-Fi Inactivity Disable” feature.
You can verify by checking the network settings to verify 2,4 / 5 GHz are broadcasting.
In my case, when both SSID stop broadcasting “due to inactivity”, my laptop and mobile devices auto reconnect to my home router If my browser is already set to //mypassport, anything I do results in the same error because the laptop has reconnected to my router.

@SBrown, et al

This is an interesting dilemma which I have pretty much neutralized when I use my older, original MPW while at home. When I power up the MPW, I have it configured to always connect to my home network. There are quite a few advantages to using the MPW (in fact, any wireless drive) this way; this problem being one of the reasons. Once MPW is connected to network, it never has the problem of not having another signal to connect to, so its Wi-Fi never turns off as this particular issue describes.

Now, for the other advantages. The Wi-Fi signal of a wireless drive is less robust than a powerful and quality dual-band router signal. The range of any wireless drive can’t fill a whole house with signal like a router can; especially with a few range extenders around to fill in the gaps of signal strength.

The “trick” for great signal is to have the MPW within 10-15 feet of the router. I can be on the other side of the house from the MPW with a tablet viewing a movie from MPW and have a perfect signal and have no weak signal issues.

Wireless devices can access the MPW from anywhere in house, and of course wired devices (like computers and WDTV media players) have no connection issues to MPW via the router.

My wireless devices all connect to the router Wi-Fi on 5G; 2.4G is not ideal for HD video streaming, and I can even be connected to my older 2.4G only MPW at 5G through the router connection. This method improves video quality, although the MPW is connecting to router via 2.4G but my tablet/phone and other devices can connect via 5G. Cool.

So, one might be tempted to keep the MPW plugged into its power supply 24/7 to get max advantage of these benefits, but don’t do it. The batteries don’t like this long term power connection. For a two hour movie, one could plug the MPW in for say, the length of a movie if the MPW is say. 80-90% charged, the battery will not overcharge while running the MPW for a movie. BUT, unplug the power supple shortly after the movie ends; especially if battery is fully charged. One can also use a hefty battery bank to MPW instead of it’s power supply, OR to charge the MPW.

One final important reason to always connect your MPW to your router Wi-Fi: you retain your internet connection for your mobile devices!

I also have a Sandisk Connect wireless flash drive I keep in a pocket when I want my media while on the move, but when at home, even it is connected to the router to get the many advantages of doing so.

No effect. I performed a factory reset and the issue remains. I still cant’ change the default SSID or the password, which is presenting a security issue. I need to change these things, and should be able to. Any other suggestions or should I return the product as faulty.

Please advise. Thank you.

Don’t assume it is faulty. It could be “operator error” so CALL WD Support and get their assist beforehand. If they think it is faulty, they will take care of you.

“Operator Error” as in user error? Ok thanks. I’ll see what they can do…

Yes, the terms are synonymous. Don’t feel dinged, we all can make an error. It would be nice to know it’s not defective.

Yeah no worries, my ego wasn’t bruised. I just wanted to know if there was more to add to that point. As in, “you were doing this wrong, try this instead…”
