Trying to set up My Passport Wireless & network is locked/needs passwords

I just got a My Passport Wireless, & I am trying to connect it to my Mac Book Pro. It shows up on my networks, but it is locked & requires a WPA2 password. This is brand new, out of the box, so why does it already have a password on it? I am stuck & don’t know what to do!

Did you try referring to the complete user manual found on the drive or downloadable from WD Support:

The MPW is a lot more than a regular drive; you’d better get more familiar with its instructions.

Now, the password you need is the password of your home NETWORK – there is no password yet in the MPW; you add it during setup. You are to connect first to the wireless signal of the MPW via a phone, tablet, or computer wirelessly, and if you then want to connect MPW to your home network as well, this is the point you need the name and password of your home network. This way, not only are you connected to the MPW via My CLoud app or Mac, you can also be connected to your internet signal as well as your network.

When your MPW is connected to the home network, you do NOT connect to the MPW wireless signal, to use it, you connect to your home network. Confused? That’s why you need to refer to the user manual.

While the MPW is NOT connected to any device such as a computer, but just turned on working wirelessly. do the initial setup. Then connect it to your home network.

Anyway, be patient, follow instructions, and don’t do anything “stupid” {like reformat the drive.) The MPW is not difficult to setup if you understand the steps and understand the concept of how it works. Good luck.

Yes, I’ve read through the User’s Manual & watched the video tutorials. But right off from the get go, when I try to connect to either my phone or my computer, it says I need a password, which is why I’m confused because I haven’t even got to the setup process to create my own password.

Agree, something is not right. You should be greeted with the setup procedure. So, you need to reset your MPW to factory defaults. I have done this many times for various reasons. It does not delete any data, it just resets the MPW like it was out of the box, so you can set it up from the beginning and put in your password, etc.

The MPW has to have a good charge AND the unit must be ON when this is done. I will say this again: MPW MUST BE ON!

Follow these instructions taken from the user manual.

You can perform a system-only reset of your drive two ways: manually and on the dashboard’s Admin page. When the drive resets, your data remains but settings such as your password return to default values. You can perform a system and disk reset on the Admin page.

Manually Resetting the Drive
For a system only reset, the battery has to have at least a 25% charge.

  1. With the power ON, hold down the Power and WPS buttons at the same time for around 10 seconds until the drive reboots and the Power and Battery Status LED flashes white.
  2. Wait until the Wi-Fi LED is blue before reconnecting.

If possible setup the MPW using a mobile phone or tablet (You may need the My Cloud app installed on phone or tablet. (I just don’t remember as it has been a while since I last set mine up.)

In any event, follow the set up instructions. You likely need to give the MPW wireless signal a password early on.

Also, get far enough away from other electrical interference. I take the MPW and my iPad to the dining table when I set it up from scratch.

Good luck, it should all go smoothly.

Are you sure you don’t have the My Passport Wireless PRO? It has a password out of the box, and it’s printed on a sticker.

Good point, Tony!
