do i have to be connected to my home network, in order to back up using time machine or is it also possible to do this remotely via the internet?

Time machine is able to backup locally through your network, but the software it self will not let you do a remote backup and there is no software on the drive that would allow you to backup a computer remotely to it unless you use 3rd party software that can help you with this.
