The volume does not contain a recognised file system

Hello Team,
I am using WDBABV0010BBK-NESN 1 TB HD.

The following happens :

  1. The white LED on the HD keeps blinking incessantly.
  2. On the PC, I first receive the error message "D:\ is not accessible. The specified network resource or device is no longer available.
  3. I click on D Drive (which is designated for the external USB drive). The PC tried pretty hard for a few minutes and provides the following error message : “Location is not available. D:\ is not accessible. The volume does not contain a recognized file system. Please make sure that all required file systems are loaded and the volume is not corrupted.”
  4. After a few minutes (and as long as I keep the drive plugged in), the PC provides the following error message “You need to format the drive in disk D: before you can use it.”
  5. Once in a while, it opens up the File Explorer and provides the error message as “the Parameter is incorrect”.

Troubleshooting steps done till now :

  1. Plugged the HD into different ports on the same PC.
  2. Plugged the HD into different ports on a different PC.

OS - Windows 10 (all latest updates installed).

Please help!

Regards.

Hello,

I believe the partition is corrupted. You can use the drive again if you format it. This will delete the corrupted partition but will also delete the data from the drive.

“I want to know what caused it.

Can you fix it?

It’s a common and frustrating issue with external drives, especially older ones. The file system on your drive might be corrupted. This can happen due to unsafe removal, power fluctuations, or physical wear on the drive itself. This blog post might help: [2023 Fixed] The Volume Does Not Contain a Recognized File System

Just some basic solutions. If all else fails, it’s best to seek help from a professional.

Note: Don’t format the drive yet—this can make recovery more difficult or even overwrite the data.
