maybe the 3TB is just that much hotter than the others. I have my 1GB nested in the 5 inch gap between my plasma tv and the back of the bookcase/tv stand. I’ve never had an over message. Did this start with an update to any newer firmware?
Updated with the latest firmware. Soft reset, full restore, full scan (Self-Test passed) but was prompted with an unknown message.
Furthermore,I went into the log file and I found out that the temperature for my book live was operating at 69 degree C. Full scan or Short scan both operate at the same temperature. Worst case of all, when I use ethernet to transfer my 300GB of files to my book live. I was constantly prompted with error or “sending failed”. Even 4GB of data transfer from imac to mybook live I also encounter error.
How can I trust this device when this device overheat so easily and constant file sending fail?
My brother workplace is using buffalo NAS, they do not encounter such a big problems before.
I guess WD has to re-design their “my book live” device. Maybe add a fan or improve their thermal sensor to ensure it does not overheat and at the same time control the spinning or transfering speed accordingly to the temperature?
Reliability is one of the key important features that consumer wants! Overheat = poor reliability why? Data lost!
By the way can any of WD officer or technical support officer explain, why 68 degree C is still within the normal temperature range? Not mistaken, correct if I am wrong, WD green caviar operating temperature is 0 to 60 degree C, accordingly to http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/SpecSheet/ENG/2879-701229.pdf
I believe over 65 degree C, the device is operating at very high temperatue range which we usually classified as “overheat” zone and device should be switch off to prevent further damage to the device. Why my book live is able to operate up to 75 degree C before system shutdown accordingly to http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/UM/ENG/4779-705058.pdf
Lastly, accordingly to http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/other/2579-001134.pdf
“we test drives at a temperature of 55°C.” Ideally WD only tested up to max temperature of 55°C meaning Reliability demonstration test (RDT) hold no valids for temperature above 55°C. Therefore my book live reliability is very poor since it operate at such a high temperature (65 to 69 degree C)
