Speed checking

Hi

My system works but I suspect its not as fast as it should.  I am utterly clueless when it comes to network ‘stuff’

I have a 4tb MyCloud. An Intel(R) 82566DC-2 Gigabit Network card and a TP-Link 300Mbps Wireless N Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router. All these are wired together.

All drivers are upto date.

When I check the gigabit adaptor properties it shows speed as 100 Mbps. When I would have thought it should say 1 Gbps??

Moving stuff (single big and lots of little) within the MyCloud or to or from the MyCloud seems to take quite awhile - but I have no means of comparison.

I have no idea what speeds I should expect or how to check ? Any advice gratyeful?

Cheers

Are you transferring via lan or wlan? If wlan (wifi), then your pc’s gigabit adapter propertise showing 100Mbps is not a concern. Most probably you have another 100Mbps device connected to it.

Check the WDMyCloud rear ethernet leads leds which is connected to your router. You should see green for 1Gbps, yellow for 100Mbps. Ensure the cable to your router is connected to a 1Gbps port. Some router have mixed 1Gbps/100Mbps but I assumed yours as stated is x4 1Gbps ports. Refer to the manual for details. Also try reconnecting the lan cables, sometimes loose connections will drop back to 100Mbps.

Many thanks for thoughts.

Its lan and I decoupled the desktop PC wifi card a long time back as I never need it to connect via wifi.

I checked the back of the MyCloud and it is indeed green (wasn’t aware of colour difference so thanks for that!).

I also assume all 4 were gbps ports and the manual cnfirms referencing :

  • Four 10/100/1000Mbps Auto-Negotiation RJ45 LAN ports (Auto MDI/MDIX), one RJ11 port.

Out of curiosity I scrabbled on floor behind the pc and noticed the lan cable going into it has an orange light next to it. Should that also be green?

Checked and leads are secure and flashing.

Also out of curiosity I went into the network card properties on desktop saw the ‘link speed and duplex’ drop down and swapped it from auto -negotiation to 1.0 gbps full duplex. The properites box then went unresponsive I closed it. Opened again and its retained the 1gbps link speed/duplex option but double clicking the adapter still shows its speed as 100.0 mbps.

Try a new cable.

Well the properties tinker failed. I rebooted and the lan and internet failed to connect. Adapter said it was unplugged. which it wasn’t. Switched it back to auto-negotation and instantly came back on line.

Cheers Tony - not really thought about cable. I looked at the one connecting router to MyCloud and amongst an array of numbers and codes I saw cat .5e. Checked the one (different brand and slimmer) connecting router to desktop and it also says cat.5e.

Means nothing to me but I googled and got bamboozled but then couldn’t help notice that on Amazon cat .5e cable is described as 10/100mbps.

Is that the issue? Cable not upto speed?  I saw cat 6a referenced. Is that what I should aim for?

Sorry undoubtedly dumb questions.

Thanks

J

if the mycloud cable is long enough to connect the PC then swap them, if the PC shows Gb then it is the cable

cat 5 & 5e cable should be fine for most residential usage, if you have long cables, over 50’ then you should probably use cat 6

even though the cable is rated ok it could still have an issue. is there any chance you have a switch or hub between the PC & router?

No switch or anything. Just PC > Router > My Cloud.

BUT ah ha !

Neat trick. Did it and checking network card properties and it was indeed showing 1 gbps with the MyCloud directly connected to desktop.

Just nicked a rarely used cable connected to back of TV swopped it for the desktop to router cable and bingo. Adapter now showing 1 gbps connection to MyCloud.

Sorted and off to attack the failed cable with scissors for causing this headache.

Thanks for help all.

I recently bought a 4 tera wd my cloud. When it started first time I saw rear led green. I thought everything was okay. But after a reboot or so now I notice the rear bottom led turned solid yello. This meens lower speed. I am using the ithernet cable provided in the wd box. I am using a linksys e1200 router. Can you say something about why I am getting yellow led. Thanks.

The e1200 is only fast ethernet, not gig, according to the specs here

Thanks a lot. I understand the cause of yellow LED. Probably I shall buy an
Asus dual band router. Thanks again.

I have a question: What is the difference between direct and relayed connection? Please answer with easy language! I see relayed connection in my setting instead of direct connection. However, I can remote access my wdmycloud in the same and also different network using mycloud.

With direct connection, the device accessing is connected, via the internet (a network of data connectivity systems) directly to your MyCloud. A single point-to-point connection.

With a relayed connection, all data transfer pass through data connectivity servers at WD. Therefore, data connections essentially run over two point-to-point internet connections; one from your accessing devices to WD, one from WD to your MyCloud.

Are you sure you’re a professor of electronic engineering…?
