I had a 3TB MyBook NAS, but it died. WD sent me a MyCloud 3TB w/ v2 firmware as a warranty replacement. My old MyBook had a nice Safepoint feature, that seems to be missing from my replacement MyCloud. I think the feature is in v4 of the firmware, but not in v2. It looks like there’s a backup feature, but to make it work, you have to have another MyCloud. Is that the case? Thanks!
Its called Backup on the v2.x Dashboard rather than Safepoint.
You may want to read the v2.x User Manual (http://www.wdc.com/wdproducts/library/?id=439&type=25) which, in Chapter 10 Managing Backups, explains how to use the Backup option on that version of the My Cloud. It explains both USB and Remote Backups along with Internal Backup.
It should be noted that apparently, based on others who have the v2.x version of the My Cloud, the ability to schedule a Backup by time/day, like one could with Safepoint, has been removed or is not available.
Is it true that the backup to remote location feature only works when
backing up to another MyCloud device?
What other device did you want to remote backup too?
Generally the remote backup feature is typically used between My Cloud that support that option. It may be possible to configure a non WD NAS to receive the backup but it would depend on the non WD device and what features or options it can support. One would have to contact the other device manufacturer or support forums to see if remote connections from a My Cloud can be made to it.
I have an older WD MyDrive NAS that I want to do the remote backup to. The
Safepoint feature made it easy to do, but for some reason WD didn’t include
it on my firmware version for MyCloud
Remote backup generally means backing up to a location off site across the internet. The Gen 2 v2.x firmware version My Clouds appear to have the capability to perform a remote backup across the internet to another My Cloud that supports the “remote backup” option.
The earlier Gen 1 v3.x/v4.x My Cloud units did not have the capability to perform a remote backup across the internet using the My Cloud Dashboard. Instead Safepoint would only backup to an attached USB hard drive or to another location on the local (internal) network.
If both My Cloud units are on the same local (internal) network then one should be able to configure the newer v2.x My Cloud to backup to the older v3.x/v4/x My Cloud.
