safepoint generation is messed up. i am unable to reliably create one. i have a usb drive attached to my router. i am able to find it and start safepoint create but it never seems to complete successfully. i usually get a message from the MBL telling me there was a problem and i need to restart. SOMETIMES i actually get a message that the safepoint was created BUT when i log into the dashboard the status says “invalid safepoint operation”, and the drive just keeps on churning. the router won’t let me disconnect the drive as it says it is still busy. no idea what is going on. help!
What type of router you have?
Have you tried another drive?
Have you tried doing a factory restore on the MBL? If not, move the files to a different location and do that. This might help.
Also make sure that you have the MBL firmware up to version 02.32.05-144 if possible.
Netgear WNR3500 router.
Have tried w/two different Seagate (sorry WD) 500GB flex drives, same issue w/both.
Am up-to-date on the FW.
Not really interested in copying everything off and doing a full reset. I’ve heard this takes quite a while, as would copying all the data back. What happens w/existing smartware backups when you reset the drive? Do you need to delete and recreate these? I would think the software could get confused if the drive went away, and then came back but w/the wrong date stamps on files (from the copy).
btw seems like what i have to do to get it to work is restart until i get an email notification that says it finished successfully. the dashboard will still show error status but if i examine the files on the external drive it looks ok. then i have to reboot the MBL to get it to unmount the external drive so i can disconnect it thru the router interface. definitely non-optimal. wd should have included a usb port on the mbl for this function - then i wouldn’t have my network and router adding to the confusion.
I have a similar issue with nearly identicle hardware - Netgear WNDR3700 only diff. My issues started with the latest upgrade of the firmware. Safepoint backup worked flawlessly for nearly a year prior. Now the Safepoint is hit or miss and disappears completely from the WD utility. I had a new safepoint working for 4 days - executing at 1AM and emailing the results. This morning I did not receive an email. When I logged into the MBL to check, the Safepoint was gone. Files still exist on the USB/Router drive.
Also related to the last firmware upgrade - WD2Go mobile, WD Photos, and WD2Go Internet all stopped working after the upgrade. After reserching, I had to configure the MBL with a fixed/manual IP address and setup port forwarding on the router. Never had to do this before.
what’s really annoying is, at this point, i have very little confidence in my safepoint backups. i try to do a visual inspection of files i know i created or changed recently, if i can think of file that qualifies, but it’s impossible to check the entire drive and this is a bad way to verify anyway. hopefully i’ll never have to use 'em, but if i do, it’ll be a **bleep** shot wether i really get all my files back or not. that’s pretty much the opposite of what a backup should be!
