I currently have a My Cloud Gen1 with latest firmware 4.x.x. I am planning to buy a new Gen2 My Cloud (fw 2.x.x) with the main goal of establishing a Disaster Recovery scenario where I can have everything on two different locations. This is a bit paranoid I know, but I’ve lost data in the past and it is more than annoying.
Before buying the Gen2 Device, I really would like to know if the option of REMOTE BACKUPS on Firmware 2.x.x will work fine doing the remote backup from MyCloud Gen2 to MyCloud Gen1 with Firmware 4.x.x.
WD has a compatibility matrix detailing which devices support what type of backup from another My Cloud.
Currently, per that WD link, a second gen v2.x single bay My Cloud cannot backup (using the Dashboard Backup feature) to another single bay My Cloud either locally or remotely. Unofficially one may be able to use SSH to access the firmware level of the My Cloud to use Rsync or similar command to copy data from one My Cloud to another device. Use the forum search feature (magnifying glass icon upper right) and search for “rsync”. There are a number of past discussions on the topic of copying data from one My Cloud to another using rsync.
Alternatively, the Gen1 mycloud (which has proper /etc/fstab) can mount the gen2 with NFS someplace in its directory tree, then use the gen1’s backup features as if it were a local folder.
