I’m owning an “old” 6To WD My Cloud NAS running s/w version 5.17.107. It’s not a My Cloud Home nor an EX2 or whatever.
I’d like it to become the backup of another 8To My Cloud NAS such as the WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra 8To, and I feel like it should be possible since they’re both under v5.
I’ve been rather disappointed after recently buying a My Cloud Home and discovered I could not do what I wanted to do with both of them, not compatible. Had to return the toy back to the seller.
Now I’d like to be sure before I buy this WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra 8To it’ll be possible to set up what is called “remote backup” between the two, in order to backup some (but not all) of the folders from one (the 8To) to the other one (the old 6To).
In the first times this would be on a LAN, and later on WAN/Internet.
Any experience of that setup with such NAS? Any feedback?

If I understand you and what you want to do, you own an Six TB WD MY CLOUD and you want to buy a My Cloud EX2 Ultra and use that for backup too. Have you read the User Manuals for both devices and all the Help information provided in the dashboard of the My Cloud you currently own? Have you looked at the Good Sync app for the 2nd generation/OS5 My Cloud? See example image below. Click on, tap or activate image to enlarge it.
The information on remote server backup capability from WD is confusing when it comes to the second generation single bay/single drive My Cloud units that support OS5 firmware. If one reads the OS5 Knowledge Base Article on Remote Backups, it doesn’t appear to specifically indicate (in a clear fashion) that the single bay My Cloud cannot be a remote backup target/destination or that the second generation single bay My Cloud does not support the Remote Backup Server feature.
However, if one reads the OS3 (v2.x firmware) documentation for a single bay My Cloud they’ll see its stated that the second generation single bay My Cloud cannot be a remote backup target/destination and that the second generation single bay My Cloud does not support the Remote Backup Server feature in OS3.
ISSUE:
A single-bay My Cloud device with firmware version 2.xx.xxx is unable to create a remote backup to another single-bay My Cloud device.
CAUSE:
The Remote Backup feature on a single-bay My Cloud device running firmware version 2.xx.xxx can create a remote backup to a My Cloud device that supports the Remote Server feature. Single-bay My Cloud devices do not support the Remote Server feature and cannot be a backup destination.
SOLUTION:
Single-bay My Cloud devices running firmware version 2.xx.xxx can be configured for remote backup to the following My Cloud devices that includes the Remote Server feature under Setting - Network .
So a OS5 second generation single bay My Cloud apparently cannot be used as a remote backup target/destination. But it may be possible that a second generation single bay My Cloud can be used as the source (assuming one can install the Remote Backup app in OS5) to initiate a backup to a remote multi bay My Cloud model that does support being a remote backup server and supports being a remote backup target/destination. Hopefully someone who has actually tried (single bay source to remote multi bay) this can chime in on if it works or not.
