Remote Backup (3 TB) 4 days and counting

Very simple setup. 2 brand new EX4 16 TB boxes connected to 100% gigabit LAN, same subnet, no vLan, each have static LAN IP address.

Box EX4_0 has 1 share named \backup, roughly 3 TB of data.

Box EX4_1 has 1 share named \offsiteBackup, it’s completly empty.

I ran a “remote backup” from EX4_0 to EX4_1 so that all 3TB of data would initially be copied over the LAN. I thought it was unescessary to copy the initial remote backup over a 20 Mbps down/up  internet connection if it could be done over the LAN first.

It’s been almost 96 hours and the remote backup status of EX4_0 says “52%” !!!

To make matters worse:

-I’m now realizing that remote backups cannot be edited

-So when EX4_1 is moved offsite I will have to edit the remote backup on EX4_0 because the IP address of the target backup server will obivously change

-I’m guessing that deleting existing/adding new remote backup on EX4_0 will likely cause it to “not regognize” any previouly backed up data

-So, all the data will have to be re-copied over the internet to the remote EX4_1 again…this time at 20 Mbps, which I’m guessing could take 3+ weeks

yikes!

If this is as good as it gets, why didn’t I just buy a barebones rackmount Xeon quad core Dell, build a 4 drive RAID array, and setup openVPN client connection to our existing openVPN server and cron a simple rsync job?

Price would have likely been cheaper. I was expecting a fancy out of the box solution, shame on me.

Maybe you should try contacting WD’s Technical Support about this. You can do so either by phone or email.

Regards,

Maybe you should just setup a cron job and rsync anyway. As you say its easy enough. Rsync is installed on my EX4. I’d be interested to see what sort of throughput you got using rsync on a gigabit switch.

The more I use it, the more I’m learning a health suspicion/disrespect for the WD provided tools… nothing that a few years of spit and polish wouldn’t fix, but I’m not sure I’d be trusting them with data I actually value just yet.
