Can someone please help me out here as I’m confused! I created a new user and a share and password protected that share. I also put some photos in my Public share as I wanted my family to access them. I then created another user with a WD2GO account so my brother could logon and access my photos over the Internet. The issue is that to first access the drive he needs to enter a Network Drive password. I assume this is the Owner Password (if it isn’t then what password is he beiing asked for?) and this is the same thing I am asked when I open the Dashboard. Looking at the manual (and this message board) appeared to suggest I need to reset my drive to change the owner password to its default. However, trawling through the message board I also found a message that indicated that the owner password IS THE SAME as the admin user password. So I logged on to the Dashboard and changed the admin password and, volia, the owner password also changed (ie I didn’t need to reset the drive after all!).
The concern I have is this: if I need to give anyone the ‘owner password’ to access MBL remotely so they can see the Public folder, then they also know the admin password and can access everything on my MBL drive! If I delete the owner password - same thing. If I restrict what the owner account can do through Users page then what is the point of having an admin account? Have I missed something here? Firstly I dont see why I need to enter the Owner password myself anyway to access the Dashboard. I can quite happily access MBL via Windows Explorer and read/amend/delete folders and fgiles so why restrict access to the Dashboard by asking for an Owner password. I also have the drive in my hand so can simply reset it. Asking me for a password is no security at all. Secondly if the Owner password IS the admin password why name them differently? This is simply confusing. The MBL user manual makes no mention of the ‘owner password’.
Any advice would be appreciated - if only to tell me I have got this all wrong!
