Question tests kitfox

I have two WD5000LPZX HDDs inside two Orico 25PW1 USB 3.0 enclosure cases. On both HDDs I ran the 4 health tests using Kitfox and the result for both was OK in 3 tests but “Extended Device Self Test” failed error code: 2 Does this result indicate health problems in both HDDs? this hdds discard not reliable

The extended test can run for several hours. The host sends the appropriate command to the HDD, the HDD initiates the extended test, and the host then waits for it to finish. I suspect that the USB-SATA bridge inside the enclosure may detect inactivity on the host side, and this may then cause the bridge to place the HDD in standby mode. It’s just a theory …

I would rerun the test inside the computer case, with the drive connected to a SATA controller on the motherboard.

My purpose with these HDDs is for external use with a USB 3.0 enclosure case, which is why I didn’t connect them to the motherboard. Does this type of error code2 indicate hardware problems with both 2.5" HDDs? Will they fail faster due to hardware failures? The enclosure is an Orico 25PW1

some Extended Device Self Test” failed error code: 2

others 3 tests ok

The error message is “Aborted”. I could be wrong, but I suspect that the bridge firmware in the enclosure is unaware that the test is running. I suspect that its idle timer times out (because it has received no further commands from the USB host), and the bridge then causes the test to be aborted by putting the drive to sleep. You won’t be able to prove this is the case unless you connect the drive to a SATA port.

In other words, I suspect that the error isn’t a genuine hardware problem. It occurs because the test is aborted by your USB-SATA bridge controller while the test is still running.

I searched in Google features Orico 25PW1 enclosure reffer The ORICO 25PW1 series (including 25PW1-U3 and 25PW1-C3) features an intelligent auto-sleep mode designed to protect the hard drive and conserve energy.
