I recently installed WD My Cloud 4Tb. Transferred some music (FLAC format) and a few movies (MKV format). Then I installed apps on my iPad and Android phone.
Questions/ problems:
-
on Android everything works (FLACs play and MKV movies with 2 channel sound work). But MKVs with AC3 audio are shown with no sound. I guess the player on Android does not support AC3. What player would you reccomend that plays MKV with AC3?
-
on iOS the things are much worse. None of the FLAC files or MKVs play. Is there a solution?
-
When I play MKVs with WD TV both audio and video are perfect. But when I play the same MKV with Roku the video looks pretty bad. Is that because Roku uses DLNA and WD TV reads it directly?
Thanks

2- Videos must be encoded in an Apple-compatible format according to your specific device’s specifications. Typically that means h.264 video with AAC audio in M4V file, or M-JPEG video in AVI file.
3- No. The transport mechanism (DLNA versus anything else) should have no bearing on quality.
RE: “No. The transport mechanism (DLNA versus anything else) should have no bearing on quality.”
But there is definitely a noticable difference. Why?
So there is no way to play FLAC or MKV without re-encoding on iOS?

I have no idea – when I play videos on my Roku, they look identical to the WD TV.
You can use other apps like VLC to play non-Apple-compatible videos, but you cannot “stream” videos and use VLC. You have to download them and then “Open With…” VLC.
If I have to dowload the content then what’s the point of having a NAS?
And VLC is no longer available for iOS.
How about a player for Android that will play MKV with AC3?
What’s the point?? Try carrying around 4TB of media on your iPad. My NAS is reachable from anywhere in the world so I can download or stream anything anywhere.
And VLC is just one of many apps.
