Physically destroy an internal hard drive

Hi. I am helping a family member clean out the house of a loved one who passed. We found an old PC which will not boot. I found the hard drive (1 TB Caviar). There might be potential personal data on it. Please advise of the best way to physically destroy this drive. Thanks!

Sorry for your loss.

If the drive may contain sensitive data, the safest option is to use a professional data destruction service or a certified e-waste recycler. They use industrial shredding equipment to ensure that data is permanently unrecoverable and the materials are handled responsibly.

Before destroying the drive, make sure there are no family photos or important files you want to recover.

Sorry for your family’s loss. Before you destroy the drive, please take a moment to make sure no one wants any old photos, documents, or emails that might still be on it. If everyone is sure nothing needs to be saved, then physically damaging the platters is the way to go. Opening the drive and drilling a few holes through the platters or scratching them up well is much more effective than just hitting the drive with a hammer. The outer casing can take a beating while the platters inside stay intact.

Thank you!

Thanks.

There is no need to physically damage this old drive. Just zero-fill it with any suitable software. After you do this, no 3-letter government agency will be able to recover anything from it.

Thank you.
