Passport Ultra disc full

I have a Passport Ultra external drive. And it recently started saying my harddrive was too full or something. There’s not enough space to do a back-up. I’m tech-illiterate and can’t even tell if my computer is being backed up or not. I don’t want to go erasing stuff randomly on my hardrive just to get this thing to work again. Is there a way to select what I want backed up or not, soas to reduce that and get it to back-up what it can? Ugh, please help.
