Sorry I am not really a techie person so please pardon my stupid question. I am just really desperate for answer.
Scenario:
I have 1TB WD Elements Hard Drive and another 4TB WD My Cloud.
I use my 1TB HD for my general everyday safekeeping of files/photos, workings etc. While the 4TB My Cloud, I am only using it as back up of the 1TB HD. I love the syncing feature of MyCloud, also the sharing of files.
Problem:
With the above set up I was expecting that the 4TB would only follow what is in the 1TB and back it up. I was expecting that whatever changes in 1TB will only sync to the 4TB, AND NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND.
However one day, I noticed that some of my files in my 1TB HD were gone missing (empty folder) and I’m thinking that the 4TB HD is the culprit. Fortunately, the files that were lost were not as important as the others. So I’m okey with it and I can live not retrieving them.
Now my questions are: how do we avoid this from happening again?
Also, is there a setting somewhere here that the syncing should only be one-way and not back and forth? In my case, I only want my 1TB syncing to 4TB and NEVER THE OTHER WAY AROUND?
Again, I am sorry for this.
By the way, I have 2015 Macbook Pro with MacOS Sierra.
What are you using as the “sync” program? WD Sync? I may have missed it but is the 1TB USB hard drive connected to your computer or the My Cloud?
Its important to understand what “syncing” does, it primarily is meant to ensure two or more locations locations contain the exact same set of files/data. In your instance you may want to perform a “backup” which is typically a one way copy of files from one location to another. Often backup programs can be configured to only update changed files after the initial backup.
One could possibly use Apple’s Time Machine (or third party backup software) to possibly backup the USB hard drive if it is connected to the Mac computer. Or one could possibly use a sync program like Free File Sync (http://freefilesync.org/) which has more configuration options than WD Sync to configure a one way sync from the USB hard drive to the My Cloud.
I appreciate both of your responses, both are very helpful.
I am using the WD Sync program to sync, i just followed the directions when I first bought MyCloud.
The 1TB USD Hard drive is connected to my Mac and the 4TB MyCloud is connected to my wall. I do all the workings in my Mac.
Now I understand that my requirement is actually “Backup” and not “Syncing”. thank you for this.
Does Smartware Backup Program works in a Mac?
Anyway, I will try the Free File Sync as both of you mentioned it.
No. For Mac’s one can use Apple’s Time Machine or use a third party backup program. There are several free third party backup programs for the Mac, among them for example EaseUS Todo Backup Free (http://www.easeus.com/).
