My WD Elements Portable hard drive is not being recognized at all when i plug it in. I have gone to disk management and it is not showing up there either. This is for windows. I think it may have something to do with me plugging it into a mac when i had not reformatted it.

Depending on the option that you selected when you reformatted the drive on the Mac, the unit might not show properly on the Windows computer.
You might need to reformat the unit to use it properly. Please note that reformatting the unit, will erase any data that you might have on the drive.
It could be the file system is corrupted.
If your drive is NTFS format, and if you still have a windows computer, plug it in. Go to a command prompt. Type in chkdsk e: (where e: or whatever is the drive letter of your external hard drive) /f.
chkdsk e: /f
Let it run. Mine took upwards of 5 minutes, but I was able to open the drive and offload the data onto other media with no loss of data.
After that, I guess you can reformat the disk to use with mac, but don’t quote me on that, because I have no mac experience.
