No subtitles for mkv blu ray rips

The WD TV Live plays my mkv DVD rips without a problem, langauges, subtitles and all. When I play my mkv blu ray rips however, the TV Live will not display the subtitles. I also validated that the subtitels are there through playback on my desktop. Any suggestions? If not please fix this issue. Thanks.

The WDTV does play bluray subs (PGS) but it does ignore the default/forced flag so you need to manually turn them on if your WDTV defaults to subtitle off. It will however not play external subs (no matter what kind) when you playback files via DLNA. In that case connect to network shares (which uses SMB) instead.

What is an external sub? Also, what is DLNA?

I ripped my movies using ByteCopy into mkv files. The files are being hosted from my Linux (Debian) NFS server.

External subs are separate files that contain only subtitles.

Post the FULL text output of MediaInfo from one of your Bytecopy’d MKV files that contain subtitles that don’t work.

So you’re saying that when you press the SUBTITLE button on the remote (or select a subtitle track via the UI) – the on screen display indicates — what?    No subtitles present?

Or does it indicate you’ve enabled subtitles but nothing ever displays?

When I click the Subtitles button on the remote in the top left corner of the screen it says Subtitels 1 : English, Subtitles 2 : English, Subtitles 3 : Castelian, but subtitles never actually appear. This problem is only with blu ray rip, the DVD rip is working just fine. Both version DVD & Blue-Ray were ripped with ByteCopy.

Hmm.  I thought it was fixed, but I wonder if it’s because the subtitles aren’t zlib compressed.

Open the file with MKVmergeGUI and ensure the subtitles are compressed with ZLIB.

Apparently not, otherwise it would read

ID                                       : 6
Format                                   : PGS
Muxing mode                              : zlib
Codec ID                                 : S_HDMV/PGS
Codec ID/Info                            : Picture based subtitle format used on BDs/HD-DVDs
Language                                 : German
Default                                  : Yes
Forced                                   : No

Which means, he has to remux the file with MKVToolnix which automatically compresses the subs. It’s odd though, cause I was under the impression this had been fixed some time ago, too.
