New software 9.4.0-191

Suddenly my MCH runs 9.4.0-191. Before it was 8.13.1-102.

Anybody having a clue why there was such a huge increase in version numbers? Release notes are pretty trivial.

As I said, release notes do not indicate a reason why there was such a huge increase in version number.

Does USB rescue mode still work on this firmware?

Sources being available, I did a diff -rq between 8.13.1 and 9.4.0 (the later being almost a GB bigger)

Not being an expert, but what strikes me is Only in GPL_MCH_Pelican_9.4.0-191_20230117/open-source-packages/arm64: samba_4.13.13+dfsg-1~deb11u5-wd-1_arm64.deb

So newer Samba and Debian 11 packages coming (both newer than OS5 5.26…).

FYI

diff -rq MCH.pdf (40,7 Ko)

Debian 11 has come to MCH with firmware version 9.5.0.
I guess we’ll see it soon on My Cloud OS 5, but it’s still bizarre that the consumer device gets this kind of updates before the more professional devices.

May not be bizarre at all. There must be 3 or 4 times as many My Cloud Home users as there are MC OS5 users and as many sources of security breach and angry users who will bad mouth Western Digital if something goes wrong. WD has learned the value of deprecating software, now if it is as good as Microsoft in obfuscating security issues, then perhaps WD can start making money under the new management.

Version: 9.5.0-186

Release Date: 08/01/2023

Supported Devices: My Cloud Home, My Cloud Home Duo, ibi

Updates In This Release

  • Updated open-source components from Debian 10 (“Buster”) to Debian 11 (“Bullseye”)
    • Updated open-source Samba package to version 4.13.13+dfsg-1~deb11u5
    • Updated open-source Docker package to version 20.10.5+dfsg1-1+deb11u2

… plus many others

It looks like Debian 11 and the new Samba package has improved transfer and access speed of the MCH. Most Home users will not be able to produce this speed.
