New icons is WD responsable?

<img src=“//cdck-file-uploads-global.s3.dualstack.us-west-2.amazonaws.com/wd/original/3X/8/d/8d36bd5491f5aed712e90f3a92f1ebdcc75a864c.PNG” width=“148” height=“124”>

The attached two icons have just started to appear on the bottom left on all my photos - they are not on the photos if I print or view them on a photo program? His this anything to do with WS? I have had the WD My Cloud for two or three years and these icons were not visible until a couple of days ago. I use windows 10 and am only tring to find out what the icons represent. Many thanks.

What program or software or app are you using to view the photos where those icons are appearing?

The icons do not show when viewing the photos in this program (don’t know what it is called?) but do appear when viewing photos in windows 10 photo folders?

What is “windows 10 photo folders”? What program are you using to view this “windows 10 photo folders”?

Not sure but all my photos are saved in the Picture Folder (top, right) Sorry for being so vague.

I have Windows 10 and have tried to see what you are getting and can’t. What are the exact steps you take in order to get to the pictures and have these icons appear?

Sorry, but what does WS mean?

Are you using a desktop, laptop, cell phone or tablet etc?

Perhaps if you use PSR (Problem Steps Recorder) and show the results here then someone can help you.
See example image below of PSR use. Click on, tap or activate image to enlarge it.

Please post a screen capture of the entire window where you are seeing the icons and the name of the program.

So far, like cat0w, I am NOT seeing what you are reporting in Windows 10 on two different PC’s. I’ve used Windows File Explorer and the Windows 10 embedded Photo app and do not see the icons you are reporting. Which makes me believe you are using a 3rd party program to view the photos or have changed the settings of Windows File Explorer and or the default Photos app. I couldn’t find anything in either File Explorer or Photos that would put icons on screen like those you posted.

Sorry cat0w that was meant to read " Has this anything to do with WD?" - not “His this anything to do with WS?”

I am using a desktop and am not very computer literate and have never ventured into PRS therefore have no idea (more, not the confidence) how to follow the instructions.

Many thanks for your patience and help.

I wonder if you have some sort of application installed that is putting those icons on the pictures. In any event those icons have nothing to do with the My Cloud nor are caused by the My Cloud since as you can see you are looking at the pictures on your local hard drive and not the My Cloud.

@Minnigaffreiver The best I can tell The photos with the green box and check mark are single photos, is that correct?

The others with the blue box are videos/movies, is that correct.

Now click on Start>All Apps and look through them to see what program shows these icons, if any. See image below.

When I open up one of my folders it shows nothing for a single picture/all pictures but does show the Windows Media Player icon for my videos/movies. See example image below for video/movie.

Bennor - the only reason I was asking about it possibly being My Cloud was the fact that these two icons have appeared on all my photos (viewing only) and I was wondering if the tick icon meant they were saved to my Cloud and the chevron icon meant they are not backed up yet? It is really not an issue, I was only trying to find out what the two icons mean?

car0w - I do not have any videos or movies on my computer they only appear on my photos, some photo have the tick icon and theothers have the chevron icon. I checked the all apps from a - z + all sub folders and there is no sign of on or the other icons to be seen? Thanks to you both for trying to solve this mystery for me, but as said it is not a big issue, only would like to know how they have suddenly appeared on my photos?

The picture you posted above (and which I’ve reposted below) appears to indicate you are looking at the pictures on your local hard drive, not the My Cloud as evidenced by the address bar I’ve highlighted. It appears to be something either Windows 10 File Explorer is overlaying as it displays the image or something that some sort of program you have installed is overlaying on images in Windows File Explorer. If you open up a photo that is stored on the My Cloud and the image doesn’t have the overlay then there is no issue other than the overlay being there while viewing the directory or share containing images either on your local computer hard drive or on the My Cloud hard drive.

@Minnigaffreiver Do you have a Nikon camera and if so did you get a program/app with it to view your pictures?

I have a Sony camera and use Play Memories that came with it to work with my pictures and videos.

Change your default application for viewing your pictures and you should not have these icons showing. Use Settings for this. What is showing as your current default?
See example image below, these are mine.

Do you by chance have Microsoft OneDrive active on your Windows 10 PC? If not OneDrive some other online cloud storage service (not the My Cloud)?

In some Googling it appears Microsoft OneDrive will put a similar green checkmark icon on images/files/folders when viewing via Windows File Explorer.

I changed the settings to Windows Photo Viewer and the icon disappeared from my photos. I then changed it back to the original default and the icons are still not there?

So I think I can assume that it is part of the photo program. I use two camera’s regularly - a Nikon D5000 and a Nikon S9700.

The Tortoise front end to the Subversion revision management system integrates into File Explorer, and adds little icons to files and folders, so Windows certainly supports this sort of behaviour.

I note that you have OneDrive and iCloudPhotos installed. Could it be these that are adding icons? Do you sync your photos with either of these services?

I see the continuing confusion caused the the virtual views created by ‘Quick Access’, which presents a ‘simplified’ view of your file system, rather than the physical view that ought to be provided by the ‘ThisPC’ physical view.

Some users love this type of interface as it makes it easy to quickly find the most recently accessed files and folders, as well as related data. Other users, particularly longtime Windows users, hate it. Good file management obviates the need for Quick Access’s simplistic display of user data, and power users would prefer to get an overview of their current PC — including information about drive formatting, mounted network shares, and available capacity — instead. Further, the This PC view has unique options in its ribbon toolbar, such as shortcuts to map a network drive and view system properties, making it far more useful than Quick Access for many users.

I’m one of the latter category of users: I’m very glad that ‘Quick Access’ isn’t available on either my XP or Win7 machines; if it was, I’d turn it off; I like to be in control of my file structure (‘good file management’), and not have folders appearing/disappearing on the whim of some ‘clever’ piece of software…

I wonder if this ‘Quick Access’ virtual file system is responsible for some of the recent reports of entire folders disappearing…

Oh this is good. We’re all pretty much wrong. It’s not a WD My Cloud issue or a Microsoft issue (per say) its a Norton issue/feature. Those icons apparently indicate the Norton Backup status of a file.

To enable or disable the icons clear or check the Backup Status Overlays check box:

See this Norton support forum thread: http://community.norton.com/forums/backup-green-ticks-missing

Many thanks Bennor - I followed your instruction and guess what - they are now gone. It was indeed what you said - it was a Norton issue. I am very grateful for all the help I got from you good people at WD (even though it had nothing to do with WD  ) I am also sorry to have lead you up the garden path, but amazed that you stuck in there to try and help me resolve this issue. Blessings to one and all.

Hey! We’re not people from WD; we’re their customers, and much more helpful…

We were on the right lines though; overlay icons applied by a backup tool. Just a matter of finding which one…

It does raise a question for the OP though; how many backup tools are running on their machine? And where are those backups being stored?
