Network and thumbnail?

Hi everyone, This is my first time setting up my home network. It works, only if I go to video, network, then select the Mybooklive. But the thumbnails files image is also beeing display. Example.

movie.jpeg

movie2.jpeg

movie3.jpeg

movie4.jpeg

movie.mkv

movie2.mkv

movie3.mkv

movie4.jpeg

Is there a way to not let all the thumbnails image not show up individually, but just thumbnail for the movies file??

The Media Library is only compiled for local storage (USB drives attached to the WDTV).

It can’t not show all files, of all types, when browsing Network Shares, because it can’t compile a Media Library.

The only real work-around is to rename the .jpg files with a period in the front:

_ movie.jpg _ becomes _ .movie.jpg _

Filenames starting with a period are treated as hidden files by the O/S, so they are no longer shown in the list (but they still get used for displaying the thumbnails).

Bulk rename utilities come in handy for this.

thank you, i will try that.

add: by doing that. the picture is gone from my computer as will? how can i able to see it from my computer?

Sorry… you must be not on Windoze?

The period file names show up in my Windoze, but Linux treats them as “hidden” (both on the WDTV and on an actual Linux computer).

I don’t think you can have it both ways if you’re on Linux… either all the files show on both, or they show on neither.

Add: is this any help?  http://www.ghacks.net/2009/04/16/linux-tips-view-hidden-files/

I do’nt know. I used window 7. After i add the period in front of my thumbnail. the file just disappear?

edit: nvm. I can see it after I used folder option: show hidden file.

Hmmm… that’s odd… I’m on Windows7, and they show for me.

Maybe Windows thinks they’re “hidden” too.

My Folder Settings on the PC are set to show hidden files and folders, but hide protected operating system files.

If you go Control PanelFolder Options and click the " View" tab you should be able to select “show hidden files, folders and drives”.  See if that shows them, because that’s how it’s set on mine where they show up.

I honestly didn’t know Windows treated them as hidden too… I thought that was Linux only… guess I learn something every day.

It works now, thank you very much. It is such a good trick.

But one thing I don’t like is that when I view the folder in my computer. It doesn’t show up the picture on the folder. It used to before i add the period.

well I quess I can’t have both way.

You can have it both ways, but you need to do a tiny bit of work.

Before they had the periods, Windows would automatically use “folder.jpg” by default, if it found it.

Now it doesn’t “see” the hidden file, because it’s hidden.

But you can still right-click the folder and choose " Properties" and then select the " Customise" tab.  For " Folder Pictures" if you “Choose File” you can still manually select the _ .folder.jpg _ file as long as your folder view settings are set to allow you to see hidden files.

Then you’ll still have the files hidden on the WDTV and still have the folder pictures you want on the PC.

THe WD TV now work really good. But in my computer, Even I did the step you say. Nothing happen after I press ok.

One off topic question. Network drive. It is ok if, 2 of my computer and the WD TV play the same file? Like all three players play movie 1?

But in my computer, Even I did the step you say. Nothing happen after I press ok.

Windows does that sometimes – the thumbnail cache either gets too big or just corrupted.  You can either live with it, or rebuild the thumbnail cache.

If you want to rebuild the cache, you’d select the Properties of your boot drive (usually C:\ ) and then " Disk Cleanup".  In the window that pops open, uncheck anything you don’t want being deleted yet, but place a check mark next to “Thumbnails” and then click “OK”.  It will say files will be deleted and ask if you’re sure.  If you delete the Windows thumbnail cache, then it will start using the new .folder.jpg images that it wasn’t displaying before when you set them and clicked “ok”.

If you do rebuild the cache, all your folders will be a bit slower opening the first time you go to use them, as it scans through looking for files to display as thumbs for your folders.  But, after that, things will work fine until the thumbnail cache gets mangled again.

I honestly don’t know the answer to that… I’ve never tried.  It may work, but I’m guessing you’d have troubles as the drive keeps hopping around trying to send 3 different bits of the same file at the same time.

Just FYI, most NAS devices I’ve used use LINUX and SAMBA.

If SAMBA sees a file preceded with a “.”, it will set the “HIDDEN” flag in the File Properties.

This is DEFAULT behavior of SAMBA.

If the manufacturer of the NAS changes the option like so:

hide dot files = no

… in smb.conf, then “dotted” files will be listed as normal files, not hidden files.

Thanks Tony… that explains why they ended up as “Hidden” under Windows… I think.

So is there anything I can do to have it not hidden in window? Thanks you guys very much for the help. Really appreciated.

Even I did this. Nothing happen. I think window does not use hidden file for thumbnail.

That’s strange.  My Win7 box will use the .folder.jpg files if I ask it to.

No clue why that would be happening for you… sorry.

yeah. but it is ok. thanks for all the help. At least I can use my wd nicely with thumbnail.
