MyPassport for Mac is set to readonly which obviously makes it useless. How can I change permissions so I can write as well!? Thanks.

You should check after reformatting the drive in MacOS Extended Journaled file format in order to get R/W access.
Note: Reformat of My Passport drive is a data destructive process. It can’t be undone after format.
I had this problem several times. Always after updating my MAC-OS without disconnecting my extern disk. With Apple Disk Utilities you can recover the owners writing rights for your disk and you can use TimeMachine again. So every time you update your OS you have to disconnect your disk(s), than you don’t have the problem. Otherwise you have tor recover your rights. You may have to check your disk and recover.
