I have uninstalled WD Discovery and mounted the MyCloud Home locally. Everything works with one exception: Uploaded photos are shown in the mobile app and the desktop app in the file explorer view - they are therefore stored on the CloudHome. The pictures do not appear in the Photo Explorer. Does anyone have an idea what could be the reason for this or what needs to be configured to make it work?
Thanks for your tips
BG

the only thing i can suggest, and you might not like this, the app for your android phone is designed to let you see those files also it backs up those files from your phone.
i did notice that in file manager in windows 10 you got one veiwable version and that is you would see your cloud home drive as you would anyother drive, i suspect that the home feature of these cloud home drives are encrypted or written in a way that makes them nonveiwable in file manager except when discovery app produced a virtual platform/drive mapped out in your file manager.
so in using the âHomeFeatureâ seems you are limited to phones and tablets that can use the app in android or apple devices.
i am a novice but also trying to deal with this now too.
maybe i said something you did not know, the mobile apps is what WD is advising, but i dont know as far as computers go, as yet.
Hi, no - this is not a question of the photo viewer in Windows. Everything looks fine in the windows environment.
I miss the photos in the WD applications like desktop app or iOS mobile app.
As mentioned, the files are stored on myCloud home, but not visible in the WD-own applications. BR Thomas
I see. As far as I know, WD Discovery is only applicable to the desktop OSes (Windows and macOS) and its support is going away in June 2023. There is no other âdesktop appâ - the alternatives from WD are only the browser âweb appâ or the mobile apps (Android and iOS).
Perhaps you should change the misleading title of your thread and rename it to something like:
File Format Cannot be Viewed on Some Mobile Devices
HEIC/HEIF files can be downloaded to Android 9 and below but they will not be able to be viewed on the device.
Devices running Android 10+ support the HEIC and HEIF files.
HEIC-encoded images offer better image quality with smaller file sizes as compared to JPEG files.
Mobile App 4.14+ will allow for the upload/download from mobile devices using Android that support HEIC/HEIF file format to the device.
Live photos using Windows Samba are not supported.
I have the same issue. I realise that most people who relies didnât understand the problem but I know exactly what you mean.
My wife uses the app on her iPhone to upload photos to our MyCloud drive.
I take photos on my DSLR and transfer them to the same drive over my local network.
The photos are located in the same folders. We organise them by year then the event / holiday etc. So a folder for say âGreece Oct 24â contains photos that Iâve added from my laptop and my wife has added from her phone using the app.
It seems only photos transfers using the app are shown in the âphotosâ browser in the app. Whilst if you use the folder explorer you can see everything. This has absolutely nothing to do with permissions / settings on the computer or mobile devices. It is simply the case that photos added via the app must be âregistered / indexedâ somehow whilst photos that are added via the âback doorâ arenât.
Unfortunately nobody really knows what the problem was described so any solution is just a guess. None of the users asking for help here has mentioned what versions of Android or iOS they were using and what WD Home mobile app version they used. In addition, if a desktop OS was used, nobody here has posted what version of Windows or macOS he was using.
We donât really know if you are using âMyCloudâ or âMyCloud Homeâ. This is a subforum for the MCH. If you have a MC, you should ask the question in the MC subforum. The two systems are very different that is why they have distinct mobile apps and MC operating systems.
Generally that is not how an owner shares his MCH. A user is created so that a private space folder is created for that user. Each user and owner can share additional common folder with each other.
We have no idea if any of the problem of photos not seen described is due to the HEIC/HEIF format or lack of or failure of indexing on the MCH. For example, we donât know if your DSLR supports HEIC or which app was used to copy the DSLR files to the MCH (eg, Finder or Windows File Explorer).
1: mycloud home.
I have the ios app installed (as does my wife) and we are both logged in to the app using the same credentials. (Rather than me using a user specific area or âshareâ)
2: yes I realise thatâs how somebody might typically use the product. Not us though.
Regardless of how photos are added, they are place into the same folders. I.e we both contribute to the same â2024 holidayâ or âkids birthdayâ folder.
The only difference is that she uses the iOS app to import then relocate the files, I place my files directly into the same folders over a local network connection.
3: the files Iâm adding are jpg mainly but Iâve also added some HEIC. Its nothing to do with the files. Whether they are shown in the âphotosâ section in the iOS app depends purely on whether they were imported via the app or not. Using the folder browser in the same app âseesâ all files regardless of how they were added (app / local network)
The question is⊠why does it behave that way? By design? Or⊠perhaps the photos are indexed different when imported through the app?
Whether they are shown in the âphotosâ section in the iOS app depends purely on whether they were imported via the app or not.
That is probably not the only way because you can easily take screenshots from Windows for example and copy them locally to the MCH private space and have them indexed and shown in the âPhotosâ tab of the Mobile app when the MCH apps were initially set up.
In order to be included in the Photos folder of the MCH, an image must be able to be indexed by MCH. 'Edited' In addition the image(s) must be added initially from the webapp (browser) or mobile apps. The image(s) could also be later added through the webapp 'Add Files' function or the Mobileapp 'Add Photos'.
Every DSLR and cameras and phones with cameras has varying resolution and compression and formats so that not every photo is compatible with the indexing done by MCH.
There is very little control over image indexing in the MyCloud Home (MCH).
One resolution suggested by WD and as you have surmised is to use the âFiles and Foldersâ option to open those files not seen by the MCH photos tab.
