MyBookLive - Recover data and remove case

I have been unable to get into the GUI menu through the http://mybooklive/UI  without errors when clicking on shares and users. I couldn’t access the shares on my PC and when browsing the folder. It would show the public share, but not the folders within the share. I enabled the SSH interface, and opened the environment using PUTTY. I was able to browse the directories, and could see the DataVolume folder, except it would not let me look inside the content of the folder. When going into the UI it would give errors saying that it couldn’t mount the data volume.

In the end, after much googling, I ended up selecting the Quick Factory Reset, within the settings tab of the UI, as the help icon indicated that I could recover data from the drive - which is what I want to do.

Does anyone know how I pop the case, without destroying it, to reveal the hard drive, so that I can attach it to my PC to “undelete” the files that I have deleted with the Quick Factory Reset?

I plan to pop the drive out, connect it to Ubuntu, and mount the drive, undelete my files using the EXT3 file system, and hopefully recover my data.

There’s only 4 latches holding the cover on (2 on each side). You just need a small flathead screwdriver and something thin like 2 credit cards to work the latches loose. Work one side first around the latches and when you get some seperation between the cover and the cage stick a credit card or something thin in there to keep the seperation then flip over to the other side. Start working around the latches on this side and when you get some seperation stick a credit card in to keep the seperation and flip back and forth as needed while continuing to work around the latches until you are able to seperate the latches from the clips. Once the cover starts sliding forward off the cage, slide the cover forward and off. There are 4 rubber feet on metal brackets attached to the drive holding the drive in the cage. Push the drive up on the lift side as far as you can (it should JUST clear the cage) then pull it out at an angle. Unscrew the 4 screws on the pcb (1 is hidden under the rubber flap that holds the led piece) and then slide the pcb straight back out of the drives sata connector. There is a thin piece of plastic between the pcb and the hdd so make sure to get that back in there when you reassemble. At this point remove the metal brackets if you need to drop the drive in a SATA dock. As far as the data partition goes, I believe it is ext4.

_ This will of course VOID YOUR WARRANTY and I wouldn’t do so unless you don’t care about your warranty or WD gives you the OK to do this to recover your data before you send your drive in for an RMA. _

So let me get this straight, to recover data “lost” in a Quick Factory Reset, I have to void warranty by opening the MBL, extracting the drive and attaching it to another computer? There’s no Linux software to undelete data via SSH access once the device is reset?

Sadly, it appears so…  I am going to have to do that with mine as well.  Western Digital should be incredibly embarrassed!!!
