My internet package is 200Mbps down and 20Mbps up. Using Speedtest.net and other sites,
I never have an issue getting 20Mbps upload speeds.
However, when I’m accessing my files over the internet using the My Cloud software installed
on my Lenovo laptop(Windows 10) or Macbook Air(2014 version), the download seem fairly
slow. I tried it at my office(gigabit internet service) and also using my phone’s hotspot(Verizon 4G and always getting 25Mbps to 32Mbps download speeds).
Based on my calculation, I’m only getting roughly 6Mbps on files coming out of my My Cloud drive. Is this normal? Does my data have to pass through a serverat WD? Or does it go directly from My Cloud drive to my home router to my laptop/Macbook?
Thanks!
The speed is dependent on the upload/download speed AT BOTH ENDS of the connection as well as the speed through the internet in general. Its possible the speed results from speed test websites are showing you the burst speed not the sustained speed of the connection. Usually sustained speed is lower than burst speed. Plus the amount and size of the file(s) you are copying will impact speed.
Generally people do not get the advertised speed for their broadband connection. Its why there is usually a little asterisk next to the speed claim and the language “up to” next to it. There are many factors both on your local network and on the internet that affect and limit your remote access speed to the My Cloud. These include the hard drive speed itself at both ends, network/broadband congestion, and the use of encryption to connect from the remote device to the My Cloud.
If you have a basic My Cloud rather than one of the newer, faster DL Series My Clouds, that can be a factor, too. My DL2100 uploads and downloads are pretty darn fast. but again, it depends on what is happening at both ends of the connections.
