My Passport suddenly will not mount-

I love-ED my My Passport4T wired external (one of two). I haven’t used them in a while - but just got back into archiving photos on both drives.
Suddenly one of my drives refuses to mount.
When I plug it into my Mac, the light remains on, momentarily, but then starts a fast pulse but does not mount.
Any ideas on how to get this going, besides expensive “data recovery” ???
