I know this is a common problem but Ive tried just about everything I can think of from all the forums online. So Im running windows 7 on a sony vaio. I have the device won’t show up in My computer any more was working fine 2 days ago. I have tried to unplug and power cycle I have tried other cords. I have tried other PC’s. I have tried the command to check and repair the drive. In disk management it shows as a 2 tb drive which it is not much smaller I believe around 320 GB. In disk management It says I need to intialize the drive which it can’t because it’s write protected. I have tried things to remove the write protection with no avail. I have tried uninstalling the drivers and plugging it back in and after a restart and it always reinstalls the drivers as mass storage driver. I randomly was able to fix the issue by removing all devices in the device manager under USB and when I plugged it back in it showed up as WD instead of the normal just mass storage driver. I then accidentaly unplugged it and now it is back as it were. I was about halfway to transfering my files off of this drive when that happened. Please help if anyone knows why it randomly installed back in as a WD and how I can get it back that would be sooo helpful.
- I also forgot to mention that I downloaded WD lifeguard and tried the test it sad it had too many bad sectors on the extended and short test. When it switched to WD that one time the quick said it had passed.
Before the drive failed was it password protected?
Have you tried updating the firmware?
It was not password protected and I havn’t tried updating the firmware. WIll that erase my data?
