I have upgraded all of my Windows PCs to the latest upgrade 1803. As far as I know after this upgrade my My Clouds were still visible under the network section of file explorer. I then upgraded the firmware on one of the My Clouds to 2.30.193. After this upgrade, the shared folders were not visible anymore. Further checking showed that the /etc/samba/smb.conf was missing. The folder /var/log/samba was missing. Rebooting didn’t fix the problem. After some trial and error I got the shares to show up as mapped drives on the windows PC’s. But this one NAS does not show up under the network section of file explorer. Any of the fixes I can find talk about changing things in the PC. But the other two My Clouds show up. It is just this My Cloud that does not show up.
What in the My Cloud allows windows to see the My Cloud. I’ve checked the smb.conf file between the two gen2 systems. They are the same.
Obviously (if you haven’t already done so) check to ensure Samba started on the problematic My Cloud. I know some who were fighting the sleep issue on My Cloud’s were disabling Samba since it has a nasty habit of keeping the My Cloud awake. If you have changed the way samba is handled (like moving it to tmp) on the My Cloud try resetting it to default.
Samba is running on the problematic My Cloud. I can map the shares to windows and access my files. It is standard WD firmware with no modifications. Since it is a gen2 I’m not even sure how to disable samba.
