My Cloud Home HDD does not "sleep"

Recently purchased 8TB MCH added to my home network (multiple Win10 systems plus a couple Linux).

I left it to run 24/7 for the first few days and am convinced that the drive never spins down to “sleep” when not accessed for awhile.

The description of WD Discovery suggests that this could be accessed via WD Discovery.

Attempts to Install WD Discovery (both small & full packages) Fail Install.

Is there another WD Utility program that would allow me to toggle “sleep” on this WD HDD?

Thank you!

EDIT:

Failed to mention one thing. I do not use this MCH as a cloud device, simply as a local NAS, addressed directly.

Hi @y0ungbl00d,

Greetings, Keerti_01! :slightly_smiling_face:

Yes, I was aware of the end of support for Discovery. I was hoping to find a “sleep” toggle in Discovery.

I have 2 MCHs (as well as 4 MCs, btw), the first from late last year. Since I was not using that one as a cloud device (weekly backups storage, primarily), I did not install Discovery.

After continuing my Rooting Around for info on the subject, I found that such a “sleep” toggle may be available with newer Firmware versions (both of my MCHs have 7.16.0-220). I also found info stating that a Reboot would initiate an automatic Firmware Update within a day, or so.

So … I Rebooted both MCHs last night and will wait patiently for a couple of days before sending up a flare for the WD Support.

Thank you for your quick, kind response!

At ~1pm I received an email from “My Cloud” Team that included the following:

We noticed that your device has not been updated to the latest firmware version. Devices on firmware below 8.13.1-102, will not be able to connect to our cloud services starting March 15, 2023, and you will not be able to access your data until the device updates to the latest firmware.

To update to the latest firmware, please power cycle the device by shutting it down, disconnecting power, waiting 10 seconds, and then reconnecting the power. Once the device is powered on, make sure that the device is connected to the internet.

So … I have followed those instructions and will wait patiently.

[Sunday] Update …

I went to bed Thursday night with my “new” (of 2) MCH setup to have the Firmware automatically updated. I checked on it first thing in the morning and as I approached the shelf I suspected that the Update was successful because the MCH was quiet. I touched the case and confirmed that the HDD was not spinning. “Sleep”.

That fulfilled my minimum requirement.

I am currently working at inducing the WD Server to repeat the Update on my original MCH.

Once I get that accomplished, I will disable UPnP on my router and see what new Cfg Controls are available in the new “Manage” link.

[EDIT added to provide a “Solution”]

Upgrading the Firmware to 94 solved my Issue. 94 apparently defaults to HDD Sleep Enabled.
