My Bro's gonna kill me when he finds out I screwed up his usb hard drive

WD My Passport 1TB has stopped working… When I plugged in my brother’s portable usb drive today, an error popped up “Delayed Write Failure…” and it couldn’t be read or work from there on, I unplugged it and plugged it in again but it still wouldn’t work. i tried testing it on 2 other computers and changed usb cables but to no avail. As soon as I plug it in, I only hear the Windows USB sound, but it does not show up in Explorer or my computer. it slows down the computer and other applications when it’s plugged in… it only shows up in Device Manager sometimes as “WD My Passport 07A8 Device”… Computer Management cannot run when it’s plugged in… I occasionally hear a beep sound from the hard drive…

Hello wdtga, welcome to the WD Community. Sorry to hear your Passport is not working anymore. I would try running zeros to the Passport using DLG. If it fails then the Passport would appear to be faulty and needs to be replaced. Check the link below for more information.

How to low level format or write zeros (full erase) to a WD hard drive or Solid State drive

If this “Succeeds” does it erase everything on the device?!? I am having the same problem however I do not wish to erase what is on there, I want to save the data and get it back …

Yes it will erase everything.

Joe

Why would a WD rep suggest erasing a drive that has important data?
