My 1TB WD External Isn't Recognized On My XP or Windows 8 system

If thi shas been posted already I apologize.

I don’t use my WD 1TB external very often. I always kept it unplugged until I needed it.

Recently, I tried to use it and my Windows XP system wouldn’t recognize it. Since they are discontinuing support for that O/S, I plugged it into my laptop using Windows 8. It wouldn’t recognize it either.

Is there a fix? I have a ton of data archived on this thing.

I appreciate any help or if you could direct me to a link that would help…

Do you feel any vibration when the hard drive is connected? Have you tried other USB cables in case there is a connectivity issue? Is the hard drive detected on Disk Management as opposed to Device Manager?

The blue light does come on the front of the drive when I plug it in,

I have tried multiple usb cables to no avail. How can I check “disk management” to see if it is detected there?
