Mounting pulled out HDD on linux after WD went red

My 3 year old 2TB WD cloud went bust few weeks back while trying to apply firmware update (it was running ownclould + DLNA). red is red is red, so with helpful nudge from forum, pulled out the HDD. got 3.5" SATA to USB enclosure with power. setuo debian linux on old laptop & disk is ready to mount … however I can’t.  at this stage I’m dying to recover data somehow to move on:

some surfing shows that it might be formatted in 4K sector (or similar jargon) that it wont mount unless I do something special. is there a howto guide that I have missed? or any help (linux or windows is fine)

PS - I will definitely attempt to unbrick it but once I have my data safe

PPS - you need to pull out the hdd to understand how solidly the whole stuff is built!

while trying to apply firmware update (it was running ownclould + DLNA).

What firmware were you trying to upgrade to, and how? Were you trying to revert back from Owncloud to a standard MyCloud?

& disk is ready to mount … however I can’t

You will need to tell us what commands you are using to try to mount the drive, and what error messages you get.

You say you are following advice from this forum - which thread?

What firmware were you trying up update too? If you tried to use the WD My Cloud firmware to upgrade a WD My Cloud confgured to run “Owncloud” then chances are good the drive is bricked.

The drive may be unreadable if you cannot mount it within Linux. I assume you know how to use the various Linux programs/commands for mounting and accessing hard drives. If it is totally unreadable then it is possible one may have to either use file recovery software (if any) on the Linux OS or send the drive to a dedicated drive recovery company. In both cases there is no guarantee that any data recovered will be readable.

Do a search through this forum, there are numerous threads that detail and discuss how to “unbrick” a WD My Cloud. Chances are good that unbricking a My Cloud drive could result in loss of existing data on that My Cloud drive.

Thanks - my responses inline> Bennor wrote:> What firmware were you trying up update too?

yes, I have already come to that conclusion

tried using mount -t ext3  /dev/sdc4 /mnt/MEDIA

that’s what I am seeking for. fdisk -l shows the output so I am sure disk is readable. also the circumstances under which it went down, I know its only the firmware that’s bad

nah dont have the $$$ for that. I would rather tinker around.

unbricking is not my priority, data recovery is …

yes, and I wouldnt attempt that unless I have done data recovery

Partial Full success on data recovery: atleast I know my data is safe!

was able to mount the disk using the steps here

http://john-hunt.com/2013/04/25/recovering-data-from-a-wd-mybook-live-2tb-3tbor-similar/

even in read only mode the disk becomes unreadable in 20 minutes or so with various errors. I can reboot my linux box, and remount using fuseext2 but this is hampering me from doing a full sync.

  1. is there a known way to mount in stable manner on linux (probably needs few hours of copy & then I can move to debrick) – update: gave up and used windows instead, see next

  2. is there any way to mount this 2TB drive onto windows - just makes it easier to sync across network

update: excellent utility ext2fs (on sourceforge) that automatically mounts the ext2/ext3 as a drive on windows (win10 in my case). was able to copy off the data overnight.

http://e2fsprogs.sourceforge.net/ext2.html

  1. any recommendation on what to use so that copy operations integrity can be maintained even if I have to reboot my machine every 30 minutes to remount the drive until full sync is done – udpate: used a plain windows copy for folders in chunks of 100GB while drive was mounted as USB via SATA enclosure on win10 laptop
