Thanks, adding my comments inline

I dont really understand all your handwringing. The debrick process is very simple and fast. You do not lose any data. All that happened to your MBL is that somehow the firmware got corrupt during an upgrade - that can happen. No big deal, as there is the debrick option to fix it without any data loss.
thanks for the help but I can’t risk the data , so recovery remains the first step before debricking, no matter how safe debricking might be. my request to help on this thread:
You really need to read teh debrick guide. And the MBL meets all the needs you list perfectly. I’ve had WD NAS products for about 10 years - they are great and primarily because they are able to be customized by the user by adding hacks.
have had the MBL configured for all my needs but now I need some redundancy to avoid any data loss in future. we learn, and move onto products. had a good time but now MBL would not be my heavy lifter. It will still stream all my movies!
- you don’t need Plex. The MBL can handle Twonky Media Server - which is a fantastic server. You could also just use teh SMB or NFS servers to serve your media to Kodi.
prefer media server instead of SMB/NFS. roku and WDLIVE TV and Vizio TV hook upto it.
- The MBL can be loaded with ownCloud. I use it and it works very well.
yes, I had owncloud setup for last two years but I was observing stuttering of movies while ownclould was doing its gig. so I’ll probably offload pwncloud to a new NAS, and use MBL to run twonky. keep NAS/MBL in sync using rsync or something similar.
so master data is safe in two disks, and performance load is split across these two. and my new NAS is glorified version of discarded inspiron laptop running standard debian which can do heavy lifting
- You can turn on the FTP server, but you that is very dangerous to outside hackers. Use wd2go, AccessBook, or OpenVpn instead.
good callout. everything is within my home network, nothing exposed outside.
