Looking To Purchase WD My Cloud 4TB - Does Windows 10 Work Well?

Hi All,

First post on these forums.

I am looking at picking up a 4tb WD My Cloud single bay device and was wondering if it will work/display fine within the Windows 10 environment? Other than that it will be Android devices (phones and tablets) that will also access.

I was mostly curious to know if this will show up fine under network and if mapping drives works fine or not before I buy.

Thanks,

I can only say about personal experience, people seem to have mixed results, I’ve never had any issues accessing the shares on my windows 10 PC, it’s set to run on the same workgroup as all the PCs in the house and I have 2 of the 5 shares mapped to drive letters,

All the phones and smart TVs in the house can access the shares that use DLNA and I can access the none DLNA shares using ftp apps.

I appreciate the quick response.

Do you also access your drive remotely? (When outside of your home network) via the internet? If so, how do you find that? Does it work well and quick?

Thanks,

(PS - Sorry for all the questions. I just would like to know before committing to purchase).

I do, but not through the WD site, I use the built in VPN on my router and connect directly to my home network that way.

I then get direct access to the NAS as though I was on my home network.

I’ve seen posts on here with people having different levels of success using the built in remote connection.

The couple of times I tried using the built in remote option, it took me a while to get the port forwarding correct for a direct connection, but it worked once set up.

Thanks again for the quick response.

So in theory when out and about I should be able to access the storage if all configured correct via the Android WD my cloud app? To upload/download pictures etc?

Thanks,

If one is interested in buying the single bay/single drive My Cloud unit, NOT the My Cloud Home unit which is a different device, one should start by reading the single bay/single drive My Cloud User Manual if they haven’t done so already. It explains how to configure the My Cloud and use its various features.

The My Cloud works fine with Windows 10. For remote access to a My Cloud one is typically confined to using either one of the WD apps/software (My Cloud Desktop or WD Sync) or using the MyCloud.com web portal, or using insecure FTP. One uses the My Cloud Dashboard to configure the My Cloud device. The User Manual and other information ont eh My Cloud can be found at the My Cloud support site:

Also see the My Cloud Learning Center…

Or a VPN.

Speaking for myself, I have not had any problems. I have a 1st generation My Cloud 4TB. I have Windows 10 with all updates on both my desktop and laptop. I have a Samsung Galaxy S6 phone and a Sony 4K Android TV. I also have another TV connected by Roku. I do use Remote Access and have not had any problems.
