Issue with MyBook

I own the external HD (My Book WD2000H1CS) for Windows, which I bought 3-4 years ago. Initially  it worked fine (Windows XP) with Memeo Back-up. When I purchase a new computer (Windows 7) I had some problems and have not really used it for many many months.

It is impossible to back-up data to My Book since my Memeo software cannot see the HD. Beside that this HD is not listed in Windows Explorer under My Computer.  So in order to solve the problem I tried a few things:

  1. Installed a new updated version WD Drive Manger version 2.115. After the installation I have disconnected the drive using Safely Remove Hardware option located on the WIndows task bar, then unpluged the FireWIre from my PC and reconnected it . My external drive has not synchronized with the WD Drive Manager Software.

  2. Purchased the Memeo Back-up Premium and remove the old version. No effect.

  3. Tried the diagnostic tool (Data Life Guard Tool) from WD and my external HD and passed all tests. This HD was listed in the Data Life Guard Tool but I cannot be seen it in the Windows Explorer nor in Memeo.

  4. Reconnected MyBook using USB ports. After this operation I can see my external HD in the “Hardware devices and printers” in my Control Panel but not under My Computer hard drives.

In Troubleshooting in FAQ there is a similar question " Why is the drive not recognized under My Computer or on the computer desktop?"

A: If the system has a USB 2.0 PCI adapter card, its drivers need to be installed before connecting your WD USB external storage product. The drive is not recognized correctly unless USB2.0 root hub and host controller divers are installed. Contact the adapter card manufacturer for installation procedures.

But why can I see my HD in the “Hardware devices and printers” in my Control Panel and not under My Computer?

Could you please help me fixing this problem.

Thanks,

Hello,

It is possible the partition on the drive is corrupted. Try formatting the drive to see if this works. Know that formatting the drive will delete all data stored on it. So if you have important data on the drive trying to recover it should be your first step.

How to partition and format a WD drive on Windows (8, 7, Vista, XP) and Mac OSX

Hello Hamlet,

Thanks for your help.

I have formated my WD HD, added letter to let the system recognize my HD and now I am backing-up my data.
