I have an older My Cloud drive running on OS 3 & I have been facing issues that I could use some help with. The drive was working fine for basic backups & media storage but I have been running into access problems from both my desktop & mobile devices. Sometimes it does not show up at all on the network and other times it’s painfully slow to respond.
Also I have checked my router & cables and even did a quick reboot but it did not seem to fix much. Also I heard support for OS 3 is being phased out so I want to know what my options are moving forward. Can I upgrade to OS 5 or do I need to migrate to a new system completely.
By the way while going through tech courses such as AWS Devops training. I realized how useful community forums such as this can be for real solutions
If anyone here is still using OS 3 and has found ways to keep it running smooth I appreciate your input.
You didn’t say specifically what model you have. Here’s the list that support OS5. If your device is supported, you consider it. Make sure you backup everything before you commit to the upgrade.
I have an EX4 so no OS5 for me. However, mine still runs well enough to carry on as my primary storage and media server.
As for response time, make sure you do not have the drives set to sleep. Mine are set to sleep so it takes a few seconds to respond when I first open a file/folder/share to allow the drives to spin back up. Sometimes I’ll see the drive lights just start flashing away. During this time, response is pretty slow. Once it settles down, response is normal. Not sure what it’s doing but I suspect it’s updating the media server database.
I rarely browse for shares. Instead I map drives to the primary shares I routinely use.
What specific My Cloud device do you have? That will determine if it can be updated to the OS5 v5.x firmware or not. Sadly a number of My Cloud models cannot be updated to OS5 and are, along with OS3 firmware, End of Life/End of Support by WD since January 15, 2022.
Because of recent changes in Microsoft Windows 11, computers running Windows 11 25H2 may have trouble accessing or seeing My Cloud devices (and other NAS devices) on the local network.
If you can access the My Cloud Dashboard review the diagnostics of the device to see if there are any specific issues or problems being indicated by the My Cloud firmware.
Have you made any other changes on the local network recently around the time the My Cloud became difficult to find or access on the local network? Did you recently change the network router, or update the broadband speed, or change broadband providers? Is the My Cloud directly connected to the router or is it connected to a extender or mesh node?
