I have heard several complain about EX2 fan that only launch when the temperature is very high, so I wonder if when does the fan for EX2 Ultra run? Does it run all the time and change only the speed? Or is it the same as the EX2’s one?

Same as EX2’s now. They changed the fan profile in the last firmware. I picked up one of these.

Is that what is inside WD EX2 Ultra? So the last firmware turn on the fan before it gets as hot as the firmware before, right?
No, it is not what is inside the EX2 Ultra. It is an aftermarket usb fan that I bought & set on top of my EX2 Ultra. It keeps the unit nice & cool.
The latest EX2 Ultra firmware seems to turn the fan on at a higher temp than it did with the previous firmware. I believe that the fan used inside is a 40mm fan. I haven’t taken mine apart to verify as I don’t want to void the warranty.
The following site shows the basic design layout of the EX2. The Ultra is the same, albeit with upgraded processor, memory, and such.
