I have two 8T EX2s, running without RAID. No RAID because the play is to back up to one of them, and then back that up to the other one. But I haven’t been able to get the cross-backup configured. When I try to browse to the destination folder, I get this error:
Remote Backup cannot proceed due to an SSH access failure
Remote Backup cannot proceed due to a failed RSYNC Test
(The two choices for what kind of device are NAS or WD Cloud. I certainly don’t want WD Cloud, because then it would try to push 8T upstream on a DSL line. I want to run over our local gigabit network to another EX2 NAS.)
UPDATE: Well, I’ve semi-answered my question. I think I need to do this:
You have added port forwarding rules for both SSH and Remote Backup services in Settings > Network > Port Forwarding in order to see your WD My Cloud EX2 device over the internet.
So I tried that, for both SSH and Remote Backup, and they both say “Failed”.
Also, I don’t see where to set the SSH password, which the backups dialog says I have to enter.
It would be great if there was a step-by-step explanation of how to do this.
Okay, got it. Lots of fumbling around and experimenting, but the gist of it is:
Settings → Network page
Turn on Remote Server
Under Port Forwarding, click Add
Select scan
Click SSH and Remote Backups
Click okay
Click Configure next to SSH on network settings page
Enter a password and remember what you entered
Click Configure next to Remote Server
Enter a password and remember what you entered
Try creating a backup
