How to add Australian Netflix to WDTV

Have signed up to Netflix and purchased WDTV. How do I make it sign into Netflix Australia?

Thanks

Michael

Yes WD ,   give us the answer…

if you purchased the new 2014 WDTV Media Player … then you’re outta luck, it doesent have Netflix

if you have the older WDTV Live Streaming Media Player … then you’ll probably have to wait for a Firmware Upgrade :confounded:

If you want Netflix Australia now … tonight     JB Hi-Fi might still be open, pick up a $50 Chromecast and you’re set

Can someone explain why WD TV 2014 does not get Netflix? it is only an app to download?

Because WD intentionally got rid of it.

In bold letters:   “You don’t need another player for Netflix. You need a player for your personal stuff.”

Hello all

has a solution to this been provided?

Thanks

Personally speaking, I’m sort of glad WD TV (personal edition at least) doesn’t offer Netflix. My reasoning? Well every Friday is movie night at my house. We have friends and family come over and hang out and we watch which either a highly anticipated new release movie or browse through my rather large, but no duds collection of movies. I rarely use my WD TV for anything else besides watching my workout DVDs on it or the occasional TV series binge watching. The problem with Netflix is that I have an amazing collection of Blu Rays which range from black and white classics remasterd in Blu Ray format to highly anticipated new releases and it’s all there, just waiting to be watched again in all it’s Blu Ray glory. Then there’s Netflix, although it has some interesting shows available, (though I prefer the ones you can find on Cable, namely The Blacklist, Forever, The 100, and Allegiance) there’s not much else Netflix has available to me. I have most every movie I love and I’m timely about adding new movies to my collection as soon as they’re released. So what’s the point of swimming through a sea of mostly **bleep**ty B-rated movies no one’s ever heard of (for good reason) to find a possible few gems floating around, when I can just turn on WD TV, go to my collection and either find a particular movie I’m in the mood for or if, as is the case when a new movie hasn’t been released, my friends and family have an awesome array of classics and gems to sift through.

2 solutions …

  1. Miracast it from your Android phone / tablet to the 2014 WDTV

  2. Buy a device that says “Netflix” on the Box

Blasphemy !!  :smileyvery-happy:

just kidding  … i have Zero interest in Netflix (or any other subscription based streaming service)

Haha! Same!! Buffering is an instant deal breaker when it comes to movies, that and the quality is never as good as BluRay 1080p.

Edit: Though I am interested in learning the language used in programming WD TV’s to resolve this issue so others can have a fully capable and well rounded device. It might be a pipe dream, but it would cure a lot of headaches, so I think it’d be worth the effort. There has to be someone knowledgeable enough in hacking this device to make this happen and who is interested in seeing this through, no?

you won’t get any “hacking” help here on the Official WD Website

that said, there are “other” sites … but remember there’s a lot of proprietary code (WD only release GNU Code they use as required)  and not to mention Netflix uses encryption keys for their service which devices must have to decrypt the streams (or something like that)

Just a quick google search about Netflix Encryption … PDF  (i read a little bit of it, but it was sending me to sleep) :smileyvery-happy:

Ok, I think I’m going to go with the “not my problem” sentiment here haha

So I logged a support case - reply “they are working on a firmware update” but no ETA,to me meaning the work to do this may not be locked in and that statement could just be to appease users.

To sum up…

We can subscribe to Netflix in Australia but WD have a product that they have purposely bared this functionality on.  Their marketing messages found all over the web state support for Netflix.

I’m a software developer and know it would be a very simple thing for WD to enable the Netflix app on the Australia firmware, they’ve done the work as it exists for other countries.  Adding this should be minimal effort for them and if they care one bit about their customers they should prioritize this work.

If they really cared about their customers they should be responding to this thread with a “yes we are doing this and the expected release date is…”

They should also release a technote stating the ETA of Netflix support.

Given Netflix is probably the pick of streaming providers in Australia at the moment, WDs lack of support should be costing them sales.  Just walk into your local JB-Hifi and Netflix logos are prominent on anything that supports it.  i.e. users are making purchase decisions on it even if they are not currently Netflix subscribers.  WD lack of support represents lost sales oppertunities to them.

I have a TV with built in NetFlix and yes do Chromecast for another 2, but I want the WD box in my home theater room to have Netflix native without me needing to add a chromecast and control via my phone/tablet.  The product should do it, is capable and is just being artificially restricted by WD.

WD developers, can we please get a response and an ETA?

not this one …

(found on the official Western Digital site)  http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=1270#Tab2

the funny thing is … Netflix for the WDTV has been submitted in the “Ideas” forum, yet only 10 people have voted for it ?

That’s interesting, and I think more of a factor that this WD forum is fairly hidden from the public.  I didn’t find all this information when I went on a search, so other people trying to resolve this are probably also missing it.

I will see if WD has a response here, i.e. give them a chance.  If not it will be time to hit every online review forum I can find warning end users of the omission of Netflix. In the reviews I can link to the idea and threads on this and hopefully get that idea noticed by WD.

I’d like you provide ONE EXAMPLE of WD Marketing for THIS PRODUCT that indicates it supports NetFlix.

JUST ONE, please?

Sure…

A quick search of the public WD site using the word NetFlix results in lots of hits…

(Assuming WD will probably run around and take them all down now, here are some screen shots before they do)

From the WD instructions on how to get it running, here’s the final step…

Here’s a few links that to me seem to imply that the WD TV Live Hub is capable of supporting Netflix.

And Just to finish off… Look at this smiling person, she’s smiling as her WDTV box can do Netflix, why do people buying any of the other products get screwed (even though as shown above there is plenty of WD literature that states the other boxes are capable of running Netflix!)

Tony asked you for one example of This Product*  that indicates it supports Netflix

* 2014 WDTV Media Player (aka. “Personal Edition”)

http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.aspx?id=1270

Nowhere does it advertise support for Netflix.

Providing examples of old marketing campaigns for discontinued devices has no relevence to the current 2014 device.

If you want a WDTV that has Netflix then go ahead, and buy one of the old discontinued device’s that you saw in the old marketing. (which by the way, why would WD remove the ads ? if it says it’s supports … fine, if it support it, then it doesent support it)

Quote: even though as shown above there is plenty of WD literature that states the other boxes are capable of running Netflix!

The new 2014 WDTV is technically capable of running Netflix … it’s the SAME hardware as the WDTV Live Streaming.

So, the decision to remove Netflix is not a hardware issue … most probably a licensing / cost issue and even possible Netlfix decided to take it away from WD ?

Whatever the reason, you won’t get any official answer to the question.  This is a user-to-user forum.

Be happy your TV and Chromecasts support Netflix.

Now we’re getting somewhere - that’s exactly the point!

I raised a support case on the product I do own (WD TV Live Hub) and the WD Support tech sent me to this thread.  Which in all fairness is titled “How to add Australian Netflix to WDTV”.

Title exactly fits what I am looking for - Netflix Australia on my WDTV.  The title doesn’t differentiate models and in my case I have the Live Hub which the marketing literature indicates is capable of running Netflix. Hence my question of why no support in Australia where this box is obviously supported in many other countries?  Obvious answer is firmware update needed which lead to my next question of when?
