How long to complete a full reset on a 3TB drive? and can I access the drive during this reset?

hi All,
I hope someone can help me. I bought a 3B My Cloud just over a week ago.

I found I could not access the device. I mean I type http://wdmycloud/ into google chrome and I get the message:
wdmycloud’s server DNS address could not be found.

In desperation I performed a 40 second reset.
That was 7 days ago and I still have a flashing blue light. Is this normal that it takes so long? Should I power of and on the device?

thanks for looking? Nick

40 second reset should take just 15 minutes
it resets the system only (user name / password / network settings etc) without alternating any data in the harddisk
you definitely should power off and on the device

hi Rubsiu, thanks for your feed back, I have found other threads on here discussing that a 40 second reset initiates a full defrag which can take over a day. are these guys wrong?

also have read that power off during this process is not a good idea. do you think this is safe?

My Clouds use EXT4 (Linux) file system on the internal hdd … EXT4 does not fragment files in the same way NTFS/FAT/FAT32 does.

I don’t believe a ‘reset’ initates a full defrag as it is unnecessary to defrag linux file systems.

Flashing Blue Light according to the User Manual means the HDD is in ‘Standby Mode’ Page 10 of the Manual Below

‘Standby Mode’ is activated by enabling the Energy Saver ‘Drive Sleep’ Option Page 78 of the Manual Below

  1. Check the following:

If the LED is solid blue (indicating the device is idle) or pulsing blue (indicating the device is on standby), the device is ready to shut down.

Thanks JoeySmyth,

Well perhaps it is in standby. when I first powered the unit up it reached the stage were it had a solid blue light, after putting the device through a 40second reset the only difference is that now the light is permanently flashing on the box, but I still cant access it (and I have never been able to since I bought it).

I can see the device listed under Windows Explorer in the Network folder, but I cant connect to it, when I click on it it tries to open 192.168.1.14 and chrome returns: “This site can’t be reached 192.168.1.14 refused to connect.”

I cant open the device using http://wdmycloud/ as chrome returns “This site can’t be reached wdmycloud’s server DNS address could not be found.”

I cant access it via the website My Cloud OS3 End of Service | Western Digital here the page says “My Cloud device not found”

any suggestions welcome?

thanks again

just checked the 40second reset details at this web page

it states:
After releasing the reset button the device will reboot
Note:
This process may take upwards of 15 minutes. Please wait until the Power LED is solid blue, indicating the device is ready to use.

Well I’m on day 8 now and I’m still waiting for a solid blue light ??
is this normal?

Just reboot it and see

OK I have pulled the power plug and put it back in, left it for 15m.
The blue light is still flashing
I can still the the My Cloud on the Network within Windows Explorer
I can still not connect to the My Cloud using wdmycloud/ or using 192.168.1.14 or using My Cloud OS3 End of Service | Western Digital

so what am I missing? Or is this unit faulty?

(Perhaps I should start a new thread asking fro advice on not being able to connect tot he device, as opposed to asking about the reset time)

When you say blink. What do you mean? When the MC is in standby. The Blue light fades on and off
during about 3 seconds. Are you saying that you can see the MC within windows explorer? Go to this link

download the wakeonlan program. This program has the ability to scan the network and tell you all of the devices it can see. It will list the IP and mac addresses. This will tell you the address of the MC.

Hi Rac8006

No the blue LED flashes several times a second.

Well still try the wakeonlan procedure.

Hi rac8806
OK I have run this WakeMeOnLan software. it tells me what I already knew the IP address is 192.168.1.14 ??
I cannot connect to this address. when I type this into chrome i get error massage “This site cannot be reached”?

What are the MyCloud ethernet port LEDs doing?

HI cpt_paranioa,

the orange one is solid the green one is mostly solid but flashes a few times every second or two

Okay, so the network is active.

Try <IP address>/UI in the browser window (as per the quick start guide and user manual).

Just a thought: it is the MyCloud you have, not the MyCloud Home, right?

If you mean I should type http://192.168.1.14/ui into chrome then I have just tried this and I get the same error message “This site cannot be reached”

According to the details on the order and the photos of the units the website I have a My Cloud not a My Cloud Home

By chance is your ISP AT&T Uverse or are you using one of the routers/gateways mentioned in the following WD Knowledgebase article?

https://support.wdc.com/knowledgebase/answer.aspx?ID=15086

Thanks Bennor

my ISP is Plusnet (a UK firm) and router is the one they provided so has Plusnet on the box, but Windows Explorer calls is a Sagemcom ADSL router. so none of the companies listed on the link you suggested. So it seems unlikely this is the problem.
I can try and borrow a switch from the IT department at work on Monday and see if this has any effect

I thought that might be the case; just trying to rule out simple stuff first…

The flashing blue indicates powering up , initialising, or firmware upgrade (on a gen2 device). Sadly, the indicators have been dumbed down, so there’s no distinction like there used to be…

Power up/initialise can mean it’s doing a file system check. It’s beginning to sound like you have a lemon; return to vendor?

One last thing I can think of: try rebooting your router; don’t hold out too much hope for that, but…
