I recently got a 8tb ironwolf on sale and was planning on upgrading my 1st hard disk in a PR4100. Plex is the only app I have. I also have 3x8tb ironwolfs in remaining slots with ~20tb movies and tv series and ~10k photos.
What is the most efficient way of upgrading? I definitely don’t want to go through the whole indexing torture all over again. I’m not worried about data on the disk as it’s backed up. I can easily clone my PC OS when I want to upgrade system disk, I’m hoping there’s something similar for NAS as well. Appreciate the help!
How are the other 3 drives configured? What do you want to wind up with? 4-drive RAID-5?
It’s JBOD, I’ll retain other 3 disks as-is so there would be 4x8tb setup. What I’m primarily concerned about it if I replace Disk1, indexing will start all over again (assuming index lies on Disk1, correct me if I’m incorrect). It took almost a week of continuous grinding and multiple temp warning to get the indexing process done the first time).
Someone on Plex forum guided me on which folders to back up and copy over using WinSCP, I’m hoping there’s something similar for the index that WD creates as well. Thanks!
Well, if I would be doing this, I would boot up some linux machine, maybe ubuntu live distro? Power off NAS, rip old drive out. Plug in both drives via USB to linux machine, clone old > new via clonezilla for example, then use gparted for resize, slam the new drive in the NAS. Might be more complicated depending on partitioning structure of WD unit, but in theory seems easy.
