My laptop crashed and the data on the HDD is not recoverable. I have installed WD Smartware onto another laptop but cannot unlock the My Passport external back up drive to restore my data as I cannot recall ever having a password and if I did, have forgotten it. have tried every conceivable password that I have ever used but to no avail. Any advice will be appreciated.

Hello, unfortunately if the drive is locked with a password there is no way to retrieve the information without reformatting the drive. I would recommend you to contact a professional data recovery company and see if they can recover the information on the drive.
Thanks for that but I have retrieved the password and unlocked the drive. I use Google Chrome so was able to look up my password on their site. A fantastic facility where all my passwords are kept safe. I’d recommend it.
