Firmware Update 5.28.105 Fails

I have my WD My Cloud set to download and install firmware updates automatically. Usually, I would just get an email saying it was updated. Lately, I have been noticing instability on the system where it has not been available from the network consistently. I logged in to the console through the web browser and found a firmware update waiting to be installed. This is unusual because it would normally just have been installed automatically.

I tried installing it through the console the main dashboard page and the download succeeded but when it reached the installation step, the percent installed freezes at 0% and the progress bar does not proceed. I downloaded a copy of the firmware from the WD site and tried installing it manually and the same thing happened. After waiting overnight with it in ‘frozen’ state, I power cycled the unit and was able to log on to the console normally and use the drive on the network normally.

It seems like the firmware update attempting to be installed might be taking the NAS offline. Since it is set to automatic, a failed installation might cause the same ‘offline’ behavior I am noticing when I try to initiate the firmware update through the console.

What should I do to fix the problem?

When you downloaded the file to update did you place it on your computer?

When you used the Manual Update did you select the file you had downloaded?

That’s how I update and I didn’t have any problems updating to 5.28.105.

Yes, I am on a Mac and I placed the WDMyCloud_5.28.105_prod.bin file on my computer. Then I used the tool you show in your screenshot, pressing Update From File and browsing to the BIN file. After selecting the file, the upload succeeds, showing the progress bar going to the right and showing the % complete number go from 0 to 100. Then it goes to the Update Firmware stage and stops, showing Updating % with an empty progress bar that does not proceed.

I tried the manual update again using Chrome and it worked. I’m still not sure why the automatic update did not work, but for now, my problem is solved.
