I bought a Western Digital 2TB My Book Essential (USB2/3 version) about 3 months ago. It worked fine until yesterday when I opened my computer, the drive didn’t show up at all in “My computer”, nor the device manager (running Windows 7 64bit). I tried using to connect the external drive to my laptop and another desktop but the results were the same; the drive wasn’t recognized by the computers. I can’t even hear the hard drive spinning like it usually does during start up. Is there any way I can recover the data and fix the problem? I had around a lot of data on it.
Could this be a problem with the enclosure? PCB board?
The drive was placed near my computer and was never moved from its position, so the USB and AC cables were very rarely unplugged and replugged. So I don’t think the input of the USB port is damaged.
I didn’t have another power adapter to try, but I tested the ouput voltage with a multimeter and it had a 12V output as written on the adapter.
