Hello all,
During last night my EX4100 NAS failed to upgrade to firmware version 5.18.117.
The power button was blinking red and the LCD Display message said “Firmware update failed”.
That took me to the Safe mode of the device in the browser.
I downloaded the firmware update file (WDMyCloudEX4100_5.17.107_prod.bin) from the WD site (https://support-en.wd.com/app/products/product-detail/p/133#WD_downloads) and tried to update it but without success getting the error “Upload firmware failed”.
Thanks for the answer.
Well, it seems that’s the problem to have automatic firmware updates on…
I also tried to access that link but, as you, without success.
I tried to find out old versions since I didn’t have any previous file but can’t find one in WD site.
Well, I thing I have to turn off the NAS since the fans don’t shut up and wait until WD puts officially the file online to download it.
It didn’t work
I’m still getting the error “Upload firmware failed”. And I notice that in the Save mode screen the version displayed is “Firmware Version: 1.01.004”:
So it appears that the reset cleaned the firmware to that old version and I would say probably I have to get an intermediary firmware version (like version 3 or older) before I can install again version 5…
Getting the “safe mode” screen puts you 75% of the way to doing an OS/3 roll back.
Basically, getting this screen means that the OS is hosed and won’t boot. . .but this SafeMode is there as a safety net: From here. . .you reload firmware and start over (all your data is still on the drive. . just waiting for a firmware load to access it)
So choose the firmware you want. The most recent. . .the oldest you can find. . . or somewhere inbetween.

Only two versions of the “Safe Mode” or “rescue” firmware are known to exist, where 1.01.004 (OS3 based) is most commonly found. Version 2.00.001 (OS5 based) was recently introduced, and is likely only found on newer devices made within the last year or so.
Ok, good to know. That makes sense because when I bought this NAS it had OS3 installed.
Ok, I understand you but … since I cannot access the OS via ssh and any of the tried firmware won’t load from Safe mode screen what can the solution be? How can I be capable of loading any firmware without those options?

Testing on my ARM-based EX2 Ultra revealed a possible solution. However, it has only been tested on the EX2 Ultra and may not work on the EX4100. The process is as follows.
Ok, I’ve noted everything and thank you for it!
Before I do something on my own, I’ll wait for the answer to the incident I raised with WD because the NAS is still in warranty and, for all purposes, it’s an update from WD that caused this malfunction, so I think WD should provide a solution for it.
If I have no other alternative I will do what you suggested.
But if I have to get to that point probably WD will have one customer less.
