EX4100 24tb and Itunes

Brand new out of the box.Fully up to date Latest Itunes version. Using Macbook Pro with latest operating system.  Was assured byy retailer this was perfect for storing 9tb itunes library, music and videos. However WD Itunes server not compatible with Apple tv. Have installed itunes and library in public folder, however, when I try and play  a movie via apple tv ATV says “no content”. Is it simply that NAS is not a good environment for an Itunes Library, or am i just being dumb and missing something glaring.

My entire iTunes Media folder is copied (from main folder on PC) to my DL2100 (similar NAS) as well as other drives on my network, and it works fine.  I use other apps to access it other than My Cloud (i.e apps that can play from a Playlist).  I do not use the iTunes server in the NAS.  Too restricting for me.  Anyway, if PC is off iTunes program is not present.  What I have set up is good for me – no computer or iTunes necessary…

Hi Steve,

I too have a large iTues data file and i manage to use my Apple TV while my computer off just fine.

I use either my iPhone or my iPad to run the WD My Cloud app (available on the App store), open the app and select the Movie or TV Show you want to view and enable Air Play on your device to your Apple TV.

Simple as that, it works fine

Hi, I just received my EX2100 and noticed this thread. I’ve read the online manual, but I don’t understand the iTunes portion in it. When would one use the iTunes server on the EX2100 (vs. iTunes on a Mac for example)?

And my audio library is split between an external USB drive and partially on an iMac.  I want to move the whole thing onto the EX2100. My question is, should I copy it onto the EX2100 and then import into iTunes (on the iMac)? I don’t really want to import everything onto my iMac and then copy it to the EX2100.

Assuming I do copying from USB drive to the EX2100, is there any special folder name I need to give it (so it can later be used by iTunes)?  I’m also confused by the manual’s description of a “virtual iTunes library” - what is that and why is it described as such?

Hoping the community can save me steps here, thanks for reading!

Don’t use the itunes portion within the EX2100, as I understand it, it will stream music only.Apple TV speaks a completely different computer speak. I have had a total nightmare with my EX4100. Culminating in a three day data transfer being thwarted by a mass of flashing red lights and a total data loss.  Finally finished storing 9tb of Itunes media yesterday, to find it wont respond this morning. Ho hum.

In the end I downloaded a fresh itunes app onto my Public drive, then used my 2tb My Passport External HD with the backup facility within the dashboard, to physically load data, as every other attempt proved fruitless. I’m sure anyone who has greater knowledge of these things will find this server a breeze to use.  I for one suspect it is not fit for the purpose I bought it for.  Good luck

Okay, this is actually a simple process.  So simple it’s hard.  You sign in to dash board, go to settings, then to media.  Once there check the option that says “iTunes on” or maybe it says “Use iTunes server”   I can’t remember cause I did it once and forgot about it.  I did this on my book live 6 and 8TB.  I did it on my cloud 4 Ex, and more recently did it on my cloud 4 Ex 4100.  Also, copying the entire iTunes library is the way to go.  That way it has the meta data and album art in the correct spots.  Just point your computer to the nas when it asks to open up iTunes library.  You do not have to import the music or movies in to your library on the MacBookPro, putting it on the nas works flawlessly, at least it did for me.  On another note, you don’t need to  download or install a fresh copy of iTunes on the nas or an external that is connected to the nas.  The above prceedure has worked for me for as long as I can remember.  Yes you have to have your computer on with iTunes running.  But I would rather do that then air play.  And enabling playlists on the apple TV will have them play continuiously even with the movies and TV shows.  I love this feature, cause I can put my kids favorite movies or cartoons in a play list, hit play, give them some popcorn  and juice, and won’t hear from them for hours.  Hope this helps.b

Oh, almost forgot.  For the one who has media in multiple places?  You can just put your media in the automatically add to iTunes folder, open iTunes, and it will put it in the correct spot or catagory.  Sometimes you have to  tag it as TV shows or movies, but that all depends on where you get it from.  HTH

Yes, it is rather simple as you described it.  I turned it on the other day, tried it, and can see the NAS folder in my iTunes program. But. I do not want to play my music through iTunes on a PC, I like to play if from anything on my network like a WDTV, or mobile devices, so this feature is not for me.  I like that the computer nor iTunes program does NOT need to be on the way I play my music.  So, I play from a copied folder of my iTunes media. To play media on mobile devices, all I need on is the router/wifi, NAS, and mobile device.  That’s all.

This setup isn’t for everyone. I mainly play my music with my appleTV. So this setup works for me. Picking my jonra, hitting shuffle, and letting it play is fine for me. I mainly use it for streaming movies and tv shows on the big screen. Since I am totally blind, and the AppleTV has accessibility build in to it, this setup is perfect for me. I have used the WDTV live streaming media player, but couldn’t work it on my own. I do use the my cloud app with my MPW, when I am on the move, but at home, and on wifi across the country, the 4100 as well as the my cloud 4 EX gets the job done. iTunes is a bit compersome I will admit, but for what I do with it on my network it gets the job done.

No, it isn’t for everyone, and your system works great for your situation.  I just don’t see big advantages for me to use the iTunes server feature in the WD devices, but it is good it is there (and simple to setup and use) for those who need the feature.

I like to create playlists of 100 tracks each using iTunes from an iTunes Smart Library and then copy the playlists to drives so apps I have that can play from playlists can use them. It is my ultimate random shuffler!

Mike,  Hi,  I just wanted to say,  that anyway it goes, your itunes still has to have a server to “stream” all of the media,  the Apple TV will not see the media on the NAS system becuase it is not “in iTunes”  so to speak,  you have to turn on media sharing that is ONLY something iTunes can do.  I am sorry to say.  A device like a mac mini to list and import all of your data into iTunes with, and then your Apple TV will see it all .

Screen Shot 2015-06-12 at 2.31.52 AM.png I have it set up with my DL4100, and all of  my media on the 4100,  then  iTunes has it all listed in the different locations.  Then my apple TV sees all of it because Home / Media Sharing is turned on between the apple devices
