Do you have trouble with the Safepoint backup? SOLUTION

The safepoint backup within the WD cloud sounds like a great idea, when it works.  I currently have a 4TB drive hooked up to it, and the safepoint was working great for a while, then one day it would no longer show up, and wouldnt back up.  All the files were on it, but it just would no longer recognize the backup.  I could reset a lot of things on the WD device, and that would sometiems fix it.  But sometimes I would need to wipe the drive and start all over.  Customer service had told me it sometimes happens and the only fix is reseting the cloud and wiping the backup.  Many things cause this I am told, even a power outage might be enough to mess with it.  This has happened many times to me.

THE SOLUTIONS

I have been using a program called SYNCBACK FREE for a while and it seems to be working great.  There are lots of settings and I have chosen to just make an exact mirror of my WD cloud.  Below are some pros and cons I have found using it.

PROS

  • It actually works

  • The mirror makes an exact copy, so not a  bunch of crazy folder names to sort through

  • Great options for scheduling the backups

  • Lets you know if it was a success or if files failed.  Also lets you know which files had issues.

CONS

  • You need to have a computer on for it to work since it runs the program on your computer

  • It seems slower then the safepoint backup, but once you have all the data on it and you are just doing a weekly/daily backup, it only takes a few minutes.

  • Sometimes my drive STILL disappears from my Cloud, but I simply eject the drive, hook it back up, and it picks right back up where it left off.

  • You will need to configure it with your computer and WD cloud passwords so it can log in if you are not already

I have had some great advice on the forum and I thought I would share something I have found that works.

In fact, using Syncback to sync the NAS to a USB disk attached to a computer is fast: with a USB 3.0 disk and an 1Gigabit Ethernet wired connection to the NAS, you can easily get 35MB/s (megabytes per second), varying depending on size of files to sync, whereas the USB connection at the back of the NAS is very slow (less than 10 MB/s)

That is also a great idea! Unfortunately I just have one USB 3.0 I am using on my computer for a seperate backup (you can never have enough backups).  That would certainly be much quicker.

Thank you for the tip.
